Temiya’s Conduct

“Punāparaṁ yadā homi,

“Then again when I was

kāsirājassa atrajo;

the true-born son of the king of Kāsi,

Mūgapakkhoti nāmena,

Mūgapakkha was my name,

temiyoti vadanti maṁ.

they called me Temiya.

Soḷasitthisahassānaṁ,

None of the sixteen thousand court women

na vijjati pumo tadā;

had given birth to a male.

Ahorattānaṁ accayena,

After many days and nights

nibbatto ahamekako.

I was born, the only one.

Kicchā laddhaṁ piyaṁ puttaṁ,

To my father I was a dear son born with difficulty,

abhijātaṁ jutindharaṁ;

a light-bringer of impeccable lineage.

Setacchattaṁ dhārayitvāna,

Holding a white parasol over my bed,

sayane poseti maṁ pitā.

my father provided for me.

Niddāyamāno sayanavare,

Sleeping on the fine bed,

Pabujjhitvānahaṁ tadā;

then having awoken,

Addasaṁ paṇḍaraṁ chattaṁ,

I saw the pale umbrella,

Yenāhaṁ nirayaṁ gato.

by which I had gone to hell.

Saha diṭṭhassa me chattaṁ,

At the sight of the umbrella

tāso uppajji bheravo;

a terrible dread arose in me.

Vinicchayaṁ samāpanno,

I reached the decision,

‘kathāhaṁ imaṁ muñcissaṁ’.

‘How can I be free of this?’

Pubbasālohitā mayhaṁ,

A former blood-relation of mine,

devatā atthakāminī;

a goddess wishing to help,

Sā maṁ disvāna dukkhitaṁ,

saw my suffering

tīsu ṭhānesu yojayi.

and enjoined me to three states.

‘Mā paṇḍiccayaṁ vibhāvaya,

‘Don’t show intelligence,

Bālamato bhava sabbapāṇinaṁ;

be as a fool to all creatures,

Sabbo taṁ jano ocināyatu,

let all folk scorn you,

Evaṁ tava attho bhavissati’.

thus you will achieve your goal.’

Evaṁ vuttāyahaṁ tassā,

When she had spoken,

idaṁ vacanamabraviṁ;

I said the following.

‘Karomi te taṁ vacanaṁ,

‘I shall do your bidding,

yaṁ tvaṁ bhaṇasi devate;

just as you say, goddess.

Atthakāmāsi me amma,

You want what’s best for me, mom,

hitakāmāsi devate’.

you desire my welfare, goddess.’

Tassāhaṁ vacanaṁ sutvā,

After hearing her words,

sāgareva thalaṁ labhiṁ;

I was like one lost at sea reaching the shore.

Haṭṭho saṁviggamānaso,

I was thrilled, my mind elated,

tayo aṅge adhiṭṭhahiṁ.

and I resolved on three factors.

Mūgo ahosiṁ badhiro,

I became deaf, and dumb,

pakkho gativivajjito;

and crippled, unable to walk.

Ete aṅge adhiṭṭhāya,

Resolving on these factors,

vassāni soḷasaṁ vasiṁ.

I lived for sixteen years.

Tato me hatthapāde ca,

Then they rubbed my hands and feet,

jivhaṁ sotañca maddiya;

my tongue and ears as well,

Anūnataṁ me passitvā,

and seeing no defect in me,

‘kāḷakaṇṇī’ti nindisuṁ.

denounced me as ‘black-ear’.

Tato jānapadā sabbe,

Due to that, the entire country,

senāpatipurohitā;

including the generals and priests,

Sabbe ekamanā hutvā,

with one mind

chaḍḍanaṁ anumodisuṁ.

cheered as I was discarded.

Sohaṁ tesaṁ matiṁ sutvā,

When I heard of their decision

haṭṭho saṁviggamānaso;

I was thrilled, my mind elated,

‘Yassatthāya tapociṇṇo,

‘The goal for which I lived fervently

so me attho samijjhatha’.

I have achieved.’

Nhāpetvā anulimpitvā,

Bathed and oiled,

veṭhetvā rājaveṭhanaṁ;

with my turban wrapped,

Chattena abhisiñcitvā,

anointed, they held the umbrella

kāresuṁ puraṁ padakkhiṇaṁ.

as they paraded me around the city.

Sattāhaṁ dhārayitvāna,

After the seventh day holding the umbrella,

uggate ravimaṇḍale;

when the sun’s orb had risen,

Rathena maṁ nīharitvā,

I was taken out by chariot,

sārathī vanamupāgami.

until the charioteer came to a wood.

Ekokāse rathaṁ katvā,

Leaving the chariot in the open,

sajjassaṁ hatthamuccito;

the bridled horse released from his hand,

Sārathī khaṇatī kāsuṁ,

the charioteer dug a pit

nikhātuṁ pathaviyā mamaṁ.

to bury me in the ground.

Adhiṭṭhitamadhiṭṭhānaṁ,

I was afraid for the many different

tajjento vividhakāraṇā;

resolves that I had undertaken,

Na bhindiṁ tamadhiṭṭhānaṁ,

so I did not break that resolve,

bodhiyāyeva kāraṇā.

because it was solely for awakening.

Mātāpitā na me dessā,

I had no dislike of my parents,

attā me na ca dessiyo;

nor did I dislike myself.

Sabbaññutaṁ piyaṁ mayhaṁ,

But because omniscience is precious to me,

tasmā vatamadhiṭṭhahiṁ.

that is why I resolved on my vow.

Ete aṅge adhiṭṭhāya,

Having resolved the three factors,

Vassāni soḷasaṁ vasiṁ;

I lived for sixteen years.

Adhiṭṭhānena me samo natthi,

There is no one to equal my resolve:

Esā me adhiṭṭhānapāramī”ti.

this is my perfection of resolve.”
