Vaṭṭapotakacariya
The Baby Quail’s Conduct
- 1.1
“Punāparaṁ yadā homi,
“Then again when I was
- 1.2
magadhe vaṭṭapotako;
a baby quail in Magadha,
- 1.3
Ajātapakkho taruṇo,
I was young, with wings unsprouted,
- 1.4
maṁsapesi kulāvake.
just a scrap of meat in the nest.
- 2.1
Mukhatuṇḍakenāharitvā,
With food she brought in her beak
- 2.2
mātā posayatī mamaṁ;
my mother nurtured me.
- 2.3
Tassā phassena jīvāmi,
I survived through her touch,
- 2.4
natthi me kāyikaṁ balaṁ.
for I had no physical strength.
- 3.1
Saṁvacchare gimhasamaye,
One year, in the hot season,
- 3.2
davaḍāho padippati;
the forest caught fire.
- 3.3
Upagacchati amhākaṁ,
It came toward us,
- 3.4
pāvako kaṇhavattanī.
a conflagration with a blackened trail.
- 4.1
Dhamadhamāiti evaṁ,
The fire roared and rumbled
- 4.2
saddāyanto mahāsikhī;
with great crests of flame,
- 4.3
Anupubbena jhāpento,
gradually burning
- 4.4
aggi mamamupāgami.
closer to me.
- 5.1
Aggivegabhayātītā,
Alarmed and terrified at the fierce fire,
- 5.2
tasitā mātāpitā mama;
my mother and father
- 5.3
Kulāvake maṁ chaḍḍetvā,
abandoned me in the nest,
- 5.4
attānaṁ parimocayuṁ.
saving themselves.
- 6.1
Pāde pakkhe pajahāmi,
I beat my feet and wings,
- 6.2
natthi me kāyikaṁ balaṁ;
but I had no physical strength.
- 6.3
Sohaṁ agatiko tattha,
When unable to leave,
- 6.4
evaṁ cintesahaṁ tadā.
I thought this there:
- 7.1
‘Yesāhaṁ upadhāveyyaṁ,
‘Those to whom I ought to run,
- 7.2
bhīto tasitavedhito;
scared and trembling with fear,
- 7.3
Te maṁ ohāya pakkantā,
have escaped, leaving me behind.
- 7.4
kathaṁ me ajja kātave.
How should I act today?
- 8.1
Atthi loke sīlaguṇo,
There is the quality of virtue in the world,
- 8.2
saccaṁ soceyyanuddayā;
truth, purity, and mercy.
- 8.3
Tena saccena kāhāmi,
By this truth I will make
- 8.4
saccakiriyamuttamaṁ.
a supreme declaration of truth.’
- 9.1
Āvejjetvā dhammabalaṁ,
Inspired by the power of Dhamma,
- 9.2
saritvā pubbake jine;
recollecting the former Victors,
- 9.3
Saccabalamavassāya,
relying on the power of truth,
- 9.4
saccakiriyamakāsahaṁ.
I made a declaration of truth.
- 10.1
Santi pakkhā apatanā,
‘I have wings that do not fly!
- 10.2
santi pādā avañcanā;
I have feet that do not walk!
- 10.3
Mātāpitā ca nikkhantā,
Mother and father have fled!
- 10.4
jātaveda paṭikkama’.
Jātaveda the fire: go back!’
- 11.1
Sahasacce kate mayhaṁ,
As I declared this truth
- 11.2
Mahāpajjalito sikhī;
the great crested flames
- 11.3
Vajjesi soḷasakarīsāni,
withdrew sixteen leagues,
- 11.4
Udakaṁ patvā yathā sikhī;
as if they had come to water.
- 11.5
Saccena me samo natthi,
There is no one to equal my truthfulness:
- 11.6
Esā me saccapāramī”ti.
this is my perfection of truth.”
- 12.1
Vaṭṭapotakacariyaṁ navamaṁ.
