    Attānañce piyaṁ jaññā,

    If you knew your self as beloved,

  6. 2

    rakkheyya naṁ surakkhitaṁ;

    you’d look after it so well.

    Tiṇṇaṁ aññataraṁ yāmaṁ,

    In one of the night’s three watches,

  8. 4

    paṭijaggeyya paṇḍito.

    an astute person would remain alert.

  9. Upanandasakyaputtattheravatthu

    Attānameva paṭhamaṁ,

    The astute would avoid being corrupted

  11. 2

    patirūpe nivesaye;

    by first grounding themselves

  12. 3

    Athaññamanusāseyya,

    in what is suitable,

  13. 4

    na kilisseyya paṇḍito.

    and then instructing others.

  14. Padhānikatissattheravatthu

    Attānañce tathā kayirā,

    If one were to treat oneself

    yathāññamanusāsati;

    as one instructs another,

  17. 3

    Sudanto vata dametha,

    the well-tamed indeed would tame:

    attā hi kira duddamo.

    for the self, it seems, is hard to tame.

  19. Kumārakassapamātuttherivatthu

  20. 1

    Attā hi attano nātho,

    One is indeed the lord of oneself,

  21. 2

    ko hi nātho paro siyā;

    for who else would be one’s lord?

  22. 3

    Attanā hi sudantena,

    By means of a well-tamed self,

  23. 4

    nāthaṁ labhati dullabhaṁ.

    one gains a lord that’s rare indeed.

  24. Mahākālaupāsakavatthu

  25. 1

    Attanā hi kataṁ pāpaṁ,

    For the evil that is done by oneself,

  26. 2

    Attajaṁ attasambhavaṁ;

    born and produced in oneself,

  27. 3

    Abhimatthati dummedhaṁ,

    grinds down a simpleton,

  28. 4

    Vajiraṁvasmamayaṁ maṇiṁ.

    as diamond grinds a lesser gem.

  30. 1

    Yassa accantadussilyaṁ,

    One choked by immorality,

  31. 2

    māluvā sālamivotthataṁ;

    as a sal tree by a creeper,

  32. 3

    Karoti so tathattānaṁ,

    does to themselves

  33. 4

    yathā naṁ icchatī diso.

    what a foe only wishes.

  34. Saṅghabhedaparisakkanavatthu

  35. 1

    Sukarāni asādhūni,

    It’s easy to do bad things

  36. 2

    attano ahitāni ca;

    harmful to oneself,

  37. 3

    Yaṁ ve hitañca sādhuñca,

    but good things that are helpful

  38. 4

    taṁ ve paramadukkaraṁ.

    are the hardest things to do.

  40. 1

    Yo sāsanaṁ arahataṁ,

    On account of wicked views—

  41. 2

    ariyānaṁ dhammajīvinaṁ;

    scorning the guidance

  42. 3

    Paṭikkosati dummedho,

    of the perfected ones,

  43. 4

    diṭṭhiṁ nissāya pāpikaṁ;

    the noble ones living righteously—

  44. 5

    Phalāni kaṭṭhakasseva,

    the idiot begets their own self’s demise,

  45. 6

    attaghātāya phallati.

    like the bamboo bearing fruit.

  46. Cūḷakālaupāsakavatthu

  47. 1

    Attanā hi kataṁ pāpaṁ,

    For it is by oneself that evil’s done,

  48. 2

    attanā saṅkilissati;

    one is corrupted by oneself.

  49. 3

    Attanā akataṁ pāpaṁ,

    It’s by oneself that evil’s not done,

  50. 4

    attanāva visujjhati;

    one is purified by oneself.

  51. 5

    Suddhī asuddhi paccattaṁ,

    Purity and impurity are personal matters,

  52. 6

    nāñño aññaṁ visodhaye.

    no one can purify another.

  53. Attadatthattheravatthu

  54. 1

    Attadatthaṁ paratthena,

    Never neglect what is good for yourself

  55. 2

    bahunāpi na hāpaye;

    for the sake of another, however great.

  56. 3

    Attadatthamabhiññāya,

    Knowing well what is good for yourself,

  57. 4

    sadatthapasuto siyā.

    be intent upon your heart’s goal.

  58. 5

    Attavaggo dvādasamo.
