6. The Astute
Rādhattheravatthu
- 1
Nidhīnaṁva pavattāraṁ,
Regard one who sees your faults
- 2
yaṁ passe vajjadassinaṁ;
as a guide to a hidden treasure.

Niggayhavādiṁ medhāviṁ,
Stay close to one so intelligent and astute
- 4
tādisaṁ paṇḍitaṁ bhaje;
who curbs you when you need it.
- 5
Tādisaṁ bhajamānassa,
Sticking close to such an impartial person,
- 6
seyyo hoti na pāpiyo.
things get better, not worse.
Assajipunabbasukavatthu
- 1
Ovadeyyānusāseyya,
Advise and instruct;
- 2
asabbhā ca nivāraye;
curb wickedness:
- 3
Satañhi so piyo hoti,
for you shall be loved by the good,
- 4
asataṁ hoti appiyo.
and disliked by the bad.
Channattheravatthu
- 1
Na bhaje pāpake mitte,
Don’t mix with bad friends,
- 2
na bhaje purisādhame;
nor with the worst of men.
- 3
Bhajetha mitte kalyāṇe,
Mix with spiritual friends,
- 4
bhajetha purisuttame.
and with the best of men.
Mahākappinattheravatthu
- 1
Dhammapīti sukhaṁ seti,
Through joy in the teaching you sleep at ease,

vippasannena cetasā;
with clear and confident heart.

Ariyappavedite dhamme,
An astute person always delights in the teaching

sadā ramati paṇḍito.

Paṇḍitasāmaṇeravatthu

Udakañhi nayanti nettikā,
While irrigators guide water,
- 2
Usukārā namayanti tejanaṁ;
fletchers bend arrows straight,
- 3
Dāruṁ namayanti tacchakā,
and carpenters bend timber straight,
- 4
Attānaṁ damayanti paṇḍitā.
the astute tame themselves.
Lakuṇḍakabhaddiyattheravatthu
- 1
Selo yathā ekaghano,
As the wind cannot stir
- 2
vātena na samīrati;
a solid mass of rock,
- 3
Evaṁ nindāpasaṁsāsu,
so too blame and praise
- 4
na samiñjanti paṇḍitā.
do not affect the wise.
Kāṇamātāvatthu
- 1
Yathāpi rahado gambhīro,
Like a deep lake,
- 2
vippasanno anāvilo;
clear and unclouded,
- 3
Evaṁ dhammāni sutvāna,
so clear are the astute
- 4
vippasīdanti paṇḍitā.
when they hear the teachings.
Pañcasatabhikkhuvatthu
- 1
Sabbattha ve sappurisā cajanti,
True persons give up everything,
- 2
Na kāmakāmā lapayanti santo;
they don’t cajole for the things they desire.
- 3
Sukhena phuṭṭhā atha vā dukhena,
Though touched by sadness or happiness,
- 4
Na uccāvacaṁ paṇḍitā dassayanti.
the astute appear neither depressed nor elated.
Dhammikattheravatthu
- 1
Na attahetu na parassa hetu,
Never wish for success by unjust means,
- 2
Na puttamicche na dhanaṁ na raṭṭhaṁ;
for your own sake or that of another,
- 3
Na iccheyya adhammena samiddhimattano,
desiring children, wealth, or nation;
- 4
Sa sīlavā paññavā dhammiko siyā.
rather, be virtuous, wise, and just.
Dhammassavanattheravatthu
- 1
Appakā te manussesu,
Few are those among humans
- 2
ye janā pāragāmino;
who cross to the far shore.
- 3
Athāyaṁ itarā pajā,
The rest just run around
- 4
tīramevānudhāvati.
on the near shore.

Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte,
When the teaching is well explained,
- 2
dhamme dhammānuvattino;
the people who practice accordingly

Te janā pāramessanti,
will cross over
- 4
maccudheyyaṁ suduttaraṁ.
Death’s dominion so hard to pass.
Pañcasataāgantukabhikkhuvatthu
- 1
Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya,
Rid of dark qualities,
- 2
Sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito;
an astute person would develop the bright.
- 3
Okā anokamāgamma,
Having left home for homelessness
- 4
Viveke yattha dūramaṁ.
in seclusion, where joy is hard,
- 1
Tatrābhiratimiccheyya,
they’d long for satisfaction there.
- 2
hitvā kāme akiñcano;
Forsaking sensual pleasures, owning nothing,
- 3
Pariyodapeyya attānaṁ,
an astute person would cleanse themselves
- 4
cittaklesehi paṇḍito.
of mental corruptions.

Yesaṁ sambodhiyaṅgesu,
And those whose minds are rightly developed
- 2
sammā cittaṁ subhāvitaṁ;
in the awakening factors;

Ādānapaṭinissagge,
who, letting go of attachments,
- 4
anupādāya ye ratā;
delight in not grasping:
- 5
Khīṇāsavā jutimanto,
with defilements ended, brilliant,
- 6
te loke parinibbutā.
they are quenched in this world.
