- 1.1
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
- 2.1
“Carato cepi, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno uppajjati kāmavitakko vā byāpādavitakko vā vihiṁsāvitakko vā.
“Mendicants, suppose a mendicant has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while walking.

Tañce, bhikkhave, bhikkhu adhivāseti nappajahati na vinodeti na byantīkaroti na anabhāvaṁ gameti.
They tolerate it and don’t give it up, dispel it, eliminate it, and obliterate it. Such a mendicant is said to be ‘not keen or prudent, always lazy, and lacking energy’ when walking.

Carampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṁbhūto anātāpī anottāpī satataṁ samitaṁ kusīto hīnavīriyoti vuccati.

nisinno uda vā sayaṁ;
sitting or lying down,
- 10.3
Yo vitakkaṁ vitakketi,
one who thinks a bad thought
- 10.4
pāpakaṁ gehanissitaṁ.
to do with the domestic life
- 11.1
Kummaggaṁ paṭipanno so,
is practicing the wrong way,
- 11.2
mohaneyyesu mucchito;
lost among things that delude;
- 11.3
Abhabbo tādiso bhikkhu,
such a mendicant is incapable
- 11.4
phuṭṭhuṁ sambodhimuttamaṁ.
of experiencing the highest awakening.
- 12.1
Yo ca caraṁ vā tiṭṭhaṁ vā,
But one who, whether standing or walking,
- 12.2
Nisinno uda vā sayaṁ;
sitting or lying down,
- 12.3
Vitakkaṁ samayitvāna,
has calmed their thoughts,
- 12.4
Vitakkūpasame rato;
loving peace of mind;
- 12.5
Bhabbo so tādiso bhikkhu,
such a mendicant is capable
- 12.6
Phuṭṭhuṁ sambodhimuttaman”ti.
of experiencing the highest awakening.”

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
