(…) Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

“Dvīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu diṭṭheva dhamme dukkhaṁ viharati savighātaṁ saupāyāsaṁ sapariḷāhaṁ;
“Mendicants, when a mendicant has two qualities they live unhappily in this very life—with distress, anguish, and fever—

kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā duggati pāṭikaṅkhā.
and when the body breaks up, after death, they can expect a bad rebirth.

Katamehi dvīhi?
What two?

Indriyesu aguttadvāratāya ca, bhojane amattaññutāya ca.
Not guarding the sense doors and eating too much.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, dvīhi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu diṭṭheva dhamme dukkhaṁ viharati savighātaṁ saupāyāsaṁ sapariḷāhaṁ;
When a mendicant possesses these two qualities they live unhappily in this very life—with distress, anguish, and fever—

jivhā kāyo tathā mano;
tongue, body, and likewise mind:

Etāni yassa dvārāni,
a mendicant who leaves these

aguttāni ca bhikkhuno.
sense doors unguarded—

Bhojanamhi amattaññū,
immoderate in eating,
- 4.2
indriyesu asaṁvuto;
sense faculties unrestrained—

Kāyadukkhaṁ cetodukkhaṁ,
reaps suffering

dukkhaṁ so adhigacchati.
both physical and mental.

Ḍayhamānena kāyena,
Burning in body,
- 5.2
Ḍayhamānena cetasā;
burning in mind,
- 5.3
Divā vā yadi vā rattiṁ,
by day or by night
- 5.4
Dukkhaṁ viharati tādiso”ti.
such a person lives in suffering.”

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
