    Retreat

  5. 1.1

    Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

    This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

  6. 2.1

    “Paṭisallānārāmā, bhikkhave, viharatha paṭisallānaratā, ajjhattaṁ cetosamathamanuyuttā, anirākatajjhānā, vipassanāya samannāgatā, brūhetāro suññāgārānaṁ.

    “Enjoy retreat, mendicants, love retreat. Be committed to inner serenity of the heart, don’t neglect absorption, be endowed with discernment, and frequent empty huts.

  7. 2.2

    Paṭisallānārāmānaṁ, bhikkhave, viharataṁ paṭisallānaratānaṁ ajjhattaṁ cetosamathamanuyuttānaṁ anirākatajjhānānaṁ vipassanāya samannāgatānaṁ brūhetānaṁ suññāgārānaṁ dvinnaṁ phalānaṁ aññataraṁ phalaṁ pāṭikaṅkhaṁ—

    A mendicant who enjoys retreat can expect one of two results:

    diṭṭheva dhamme aññā, sati vā upādisese anāgāmitā”ti.

    enlightenment in this very life, or if there’s residue left behind, non-return.”

  9. 2.4

    Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.

    The Buddha spoke this matter.

    Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

    On this it is said:

    “Ye santacittā nipakā,

    “With minds at peace, alert,

  12. 3.2

    satimanto ca jhāyino;

    mindful and meditative,

  13. 3.3

    Sammā dhammaṁ vipassanti,

    they rightly discern the Dhamma,

  14. 3.4

    kāmesu anapekkhino.

    unconcerned for sensual pleasures.

  15. 4.1

    Appamādaratā santā,

    Delighting in diligence, peaceful,

  16. 4.2

    pamāde bhayadassino;

    seeing fear in negligence,

  17. 4.3

    Abhabbā parihānāya,

    such a one can’t decline,

  18. 4.4

    nibbānasseva santike”ti.

    and has drawn near to extinguishment.”

  19. 5.1

    Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

    This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

  20. 5.2

    Aṭṭhamaṁ.
