Dutiyavedanāsutta
Feelings (2nd)
- 1.1
Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
- 2.1
“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, vedanā.
“Mendicants, there are these three feelings.
- 2.2
Katamā tisso?
What three?
- 2.3
Sukhā vedanā, dukkhā vedanā, adukkhamasukhā vedanā.
Pleasant, painful, and neutral feeling.
- 2.4
Sukhā, bhikkhave, vedanā dukkhato daṭṭhabbā;
Pleasant feeling should be seen as suffering.
- 2.5
dukkhā vedanā sallato daṭṭhabbā;
Painful feeling should be seen as a dart.
- 2.6
adukkhamasukhā vedanā aniccato daṭṭhabbā.
Neutral feeling should be seen as impermanent.
- 2.7
Yato kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno sukhā vedanā dukkhato diṭṭhā hoti, dukkhā vedanā sallato diṭṭhā hoti, adukkhamasukhā vedanā aniccato diṭṭhā hoti;
When a mendicant has seen these three feelings in this way,
- 2.8
ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ‘bhikkhu ariyo, sammaddaso, acchecchi taṇhaṁ, vivattayi saṁyojanaṁ, sammā mānābhisamayā antamakāsi dukkhassā’”ti.
they’re called a noble mendicant who sees rightly, has cut off craving, cast off the fetters, and by rightly comprehending conceit has made an end of suffering.”
- 2.9
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
- 2.10
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
- 3.1
“Yo sukhaṁ dukkhato adda,
“A mendicant who sees pleasure as pain,
- 3.2
Dukkhamaddakkhi sallato;
and suffering as a dart,
- 3.3
Adukkhamasukhaṁ santaṁ,
and that peaceful, neutral feeling
- 3.4
Adakkhi naṁ aniccato.
as impermanent
- 4.1
Sa ve sammaddaso bhikkhu,
sees rightly.
- 4.2
yato tattha vimuccati;
And when freed in regards to that,
- 4.3
Abhiññāvosito santo,
that peaceful sage, with perfect insight,
- 4.4
sa ve yogātigo munī”ti.
has truly slipped their yokes.”
- 5.1
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
- 5.2
Catutthaṁ.
