Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, esanā.
“Mendicants, there are these three searches.
- 2.2
Katamā tisso?
What three?
- 2.3
Kāmesanā, bhavesanā, brahmacariyesanā—
The search for sensual pleasures, the search for continued existence, and the search for a spiritual path.
- 2.4
imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso esanā”ti.
These are the three searches.”
- 2.5
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:

“Kāmesanā bhavesanā,
“The search for sensual pleasures,
for continued existence, - 3.2
brahmacariyesanā saha;
and the search for a spiritual path;
- 3.3
Iti saccaparāmāso,
the holding tight to the thought, ‘this is the truth’,
- 3.4
diṭṭhiṭṭhānā samussayā.
and the mass of grounds for views—
- 4.1
Sabbarāgavirattassa,
for one detached from all lusts,
- 4.2
taṇhakkhayavimuttino;
freed by the ending of craving,
- 4.3
Esanā paṭinissaṭṭhā,
that searching has been relinquished,
- 4.4
diṭṭhiṭṭhānā samūhatā;
and those grounds for views eradicated.
- 4.5
Esanānaṁ khayā bhikkhu,
With the ending of searches, a mendicant
- 4.6
nirāso akathaṅkathī”ti.
is free of hope and indecision.”
- 5.1
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
