Craving

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

“Tisso imā, bhikkhave, taṇhā.
“Mendicants, there are these three cravings.
- 2.2
Katamā tisso?
What three?
- 2.3
Kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā—
Craving for sensual pleasures, craving for continued existence, and craving for nonexistence.
- 2.4
imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso taṇhā”ti.
These are the three cravings.”
- 2.5
Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.
The Buddha spoke this matter.
- 2.6
Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:
On this it is said:
- 3.1
“Taṇhāyogena saṁyuttā,
“Bound by craving, minds full of desire
- 3.2
rattacittā bhavābhave;
for rebirth in this or that state,
- 3.3
Te yogayuttā mārassa,
yoked by Māra’s yoke, these people
- 3.4
ayogakkhemino janā;
find no sanctuary from the yoke.
- 3.5
Sattā gacchanti saṁsāraṁ,
Sentient beings continue to transmigrate,
- 3.6
jātīmaraṇagāmino.
with ongoing birth and death.
- 4.1
Ye ca taṇhaṁ pahantvāna,
Those who have given up craving,
- 4.2
vītataṇhā bhavābhave;
rid of craving for rebirth in this or that state,
- 4.3
Te ve pāraṅgatā loke,
they in this world have truly crossed over,
- 4.4
ye pattā āsavakkhayan”ti.
having reached the ending of defilements.”
- 5.1
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
