    Complete Understanding of Greed

  5. 1.1

    Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

    This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

  6. 2.1

    “Lobhaṁ, bhikkhave, anabhijānaṁ aparijānaṁ tattha cittaṁ avirājayaṁ appajahaṁ abhabbo dukkhakkhayāya.

    “Mendicants, without directly knowing and completely understanding greed, without dispassion for it and giving it up, you can’t end suffering.

    Lobhañca kho, bhikkhave, abhijānaṁ parijānaṁ tattha cittaṁ virājayaṁ pajahaṁ bhabbo dukkhakkhayāyā”ti.

    By directly knowing and completely understanding greed, having dispassion for it and giving it up, you can end suffering.”

    Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.

    The Buddha spoke this matter.

    Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

    On this it is said:

    “Yena lobhena luddhāse,

    “When overcome by greed

  11. 3.2

    sattā gacchanti duggatiṁ;

    beings go to a bad place.

  12. 3.3

    Taṁ lobhaṁ sammadaññāya,

    Having rightly understood that greed,

  13. 3.4

    pajahanti vipassino;

    the discerning give it up.

  14. 3.5

    Pahāya na punāyanti,

    Once they’ve given it up,

  15. 3.6

    imaṁ lokaṁ kudācanan”ti.

    they never return to this world.”

  16. 4.1

    Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

    This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

  17. 4.2
