Palāsajātaka

The Parrot Tree

“The goose said to the Judas tree”—This was a story told by the Master, whilst residing at Jetavana, concerning the rebuke of sin. The incident that led to the story will be set forth in the Panna Birth. But on this occasion the Master addressing the Brethren said, “Brothers, sin ought to be regarded with suspicion. Though it be as small as a banyan shoot, it may prove fatal. Sages of old too suspected whatever was open to suspicion.” And with this he related a story of the past.

    patiṭṭhassa bhavāmahaṁ;

    Yathā pitā ca mātā ca,

    evaṁ me so bhavissati”.

    “Yaṁ tvaṁ aṅkasmiṁ vaḍḍhesi,

  14. 3.2

    khīrarukkhaṁ bhayānakaṁ;

  15. 3.3

    Āmanta kho taṁ gacchāma,

  16. 3.4

    vuḍḍhi massa na ruccati”.

    “Idāni kho maṁ bhāyeti,

    mahānerunidassanaṁ;

  19. 4.3

    Haṁsassa anabhiññāya,

  20. 4.4

    mahā me bhayamāgataṁ”.

    “Na tassa vuḍḍhi kusalappasatthā,

  22. 5.2

    Yo vaḍḍhamāno ghasate patiṭṭhaṁ;

  23. 5.3

    Tassūparodhaṁ parisaṅkamāno,

  24. 5.4

    Patārayī mūlavadhāya dhīro”ti.

    Palāsajātakaṁ dasamaṁ.

    Vaṇṇārohavaggo dutiyo.
