Somadattajātaka

The Elephant Somadatta

“Deep in the wood”—The Master told this while dwelling at Jetavana, about a certain old Brother. The story was that this Brother ordained a novice, who waited on him but soon died of a fatal disease. The old man went about weeping and wailing for his death. Seeing him, the Brethren began to talk in the Hall of Truth, “Sirs, this old Brother goes about weeping and wailing for the novice’s death: he must surely have neglected the meditation on death.” The Master came, and hearing the subject of their talk, he said, “Brethren, this is not the first time this man is weeping for the other’s death,” and so he told the old tale.

    somadatto kuhiṁ gato.

    allasiṅgaṁva vacchito;

    Bhumyā nipatito seti,

    amarā vata kuñjaro”.

    “Anagāriyupetassa,

    vippamuttassa te sato;

    Samaṇassa na taṁ sādhu,

    yaṁ petamanusocasi”.

    “Saṁvāsena have sakka,

    manussassa migassa vā;

  19. 4.3

    Hadaye jāyate pemaṁ,

    taṁ na sakkā asocituṁ”.

    Tasmā tvaṁ isi mā rodi,

    mato peto samuṭṭhahe;

    Sabbe saṅgamma rodāma,

  28. 6.4

    aññamaññassa ñātake”.

    “Ādittaṁ vata maṁ santaṁ,

    ghatasittaṁva pāvakaṁ;

  31. 7.3

    Vārinā viya osiñcaṁ,

  32. 7.4

    sabbaṁ nibbāpaye daraṁ.

    Abbahī vata me sallaṁ,

  34. 8.2

    yamāsi hadayassitaṁ;

  35. 8.3

    Yo me sokaparetassa,

  36. 8.4

    puttasokaṁ apānudi.

  37. 9.1

    Sohaṁ abbūḷhasallosmi,

  38. 9.2

    vītasoko anāvilo;

  39. 9.3

    Na socāmi na rodāmi,

  40. 9.4

    tava sutvāna vāsavā”ti.

    Somadattajātakaṁ pañcamaṁ.
