The monks slurped while drinking the milk.

  10. 1.4

    Aññataro naṭapubbako bhikkhu evamāha—

A monk who was previously an entertainer made a joke of it, saying,

  11. 1.5

    “sabboyaṁ maññe saṅgho sītīkato”ti.

“It’s as if the whole Sangha is cooled.”

  12. 1.6

Ye te bhikkhū appicchā …pe… te ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—

The monks of few desires complained and criticized him,

  13. 1.7

“kathañhi nāma bhikkhu saṅghaṁ ārabbha davaṁ karissatī”ti …pe…

“How could a monk joke about the Sangha?” …

  14. 1.8

“saccaṁ kira tvaṁ, bhikkhu, saṅghaṁ ārabbha davaṁ akāsī”ti?

“Is it true, monk, that you did this?”

  15. 1.9

    “Saccaṁ, bhagavā”ti.

    “It’s true, sir.”

  16. 1.10

    Vigarahi buddho bhagavā …pe…

    The Buddha rebuked him …

  17. 1.11

kathañhi nāma tvaṁ, moghapurisa, saṅghaṁ ārabbha davaṁ karissasi.

“Foolish man, how could you do this?

  18. 1.12

Netaṁ, moghapurisa, appasannānaṁ vā pasādāya …pe…

This will affect people’s confidence …”

  19. 1.13

    vigarahitvā …pe…

    After rebuking him …

  20. 1.14

    dhammiṁ kathaṁ katvā bhikkhū āmantesi—

he gave a teaching and addressed the monks:

  21. 1.15

“na, bhikkhave, buddhaṁ vā dhammaṁ vā saṅghaṁ vā ārabbha davo kātabbo.

“Monks, you should not joke about the Buddha, the Teaching, or the Sangha.

  22. 1.16

    Yo kareyya, āpatti dukkaṭassā”ti.

If you do, you commit an offense of wrong conduct.”

  23. 1.17

Atha kho bhagavā taṁ bhikkhuṁ anekapariyāyena vigarahitvā dubbharatāya …pe…

After rebuking that monk in many ways, the Buddha spoke in dispraise of being difficult to support …

  24. 1.18

evañca pana, bhikkhave, imaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ uddiseyyātha—

“And, monks, this training rule should be recited like this:

  25. Final ruling

  26. 1.19.1

    “Na surusurukārakaṁ bhuñjissāmīti sikkhā karaṇīyā”ti.

‘“I will not slurp while eating,” this is how you should train.’”

  27. 1.20

    Na surusurukārakaṁ bhuñjitabbaṁ.

One should not slurp while eating.

  28. 1.21

Yo anādariyaṁ paṭicca surusurukārakaṁ bhuñjati, āpatti dukkaṭassa.

If a monk, out of disrespect, slurps while eating, he commits an offense of wrong conduct.

  29. Non-offenses

  30. 1.22.1

    Anāpatti—

    There is no offense:

  31. 1.23.1

    asañcicca …pe…

    if it is unintentional;

  32. 1.23.2

    if he is not mindful;
