Arahantasutta

If a perfected one has gone beyond all sense of self, would they still refer to themselves as “I”?

    “Yo hoti bhikkhu arahaṁ katāvī,

    “When a mendicant is perfected, well-versed,

    Khīṇāsavo antimadehadhārī;

    with defilements ended, bearing the final body:

  6. 1.3

    Ahaṁ vadāmītipi so vadeyya,

    would they say, ‘I speak’,

  7. 1.4

    Mamaṁ vadantītipi so vadeyyā”ti.

    or even ‘they speak to me’?”

    Skillful, understanding the world’s labels,

    Vohāramattena so vohareyyā”ti.

    they’d use these terms as mere expressions.”

    Mamaṁ vadantītipi so vadeyyā”ti.

    or even ‘they speak to me’?”

    “Pahīnamānassa na santi ganthā,

    “Someone who has given up conceit has no ties,

  20. 4.2

    Vidhūpitā mānaganthassa sabbe;

    the ties of conceit are all dissipated.

  21. 4.3

    Sa vītivatto maññataṁ sumedho,

    Though that intelligent person
    has passed beyond conceiving,

  22. 4.4

    Ahaṁ vadāmītipi so vadeyya.

    they’d still say, ‘I speak’,
