SN 35.113

Upassutisutta

While on retreat, the Buddha exclaims how the origin and ending of the world are explained in terms of sense experience giving rise to craving and suffering. A mendicant overhears him, and the Buddha urges him to remember that teaching.

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā nātike viharati giñjakāvasathe.

    At one time the Buddha was staying at Ñātika in the brick house.

    Atha kho bhagavā rahogato paṭisallīno imaṁ dhammapariyāyaṁ abhāsi:

    Then while the Buddha was in private retreat he spoke this exposition of the teaching:

    “cakkhuñca paṭicca rūpe ca uppajjati cakkhuviññāṇaṁ. Tiṇṇaṁ saṅgati phasso.

    “Eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and sights. The meeting of the three is contact.

    Phassapaccayā vedanā;

    Contact is a requirement for feeling.

  8. 1.5

    vedanāpaccayā taṇhā;

    Feeling is a requirement for craving.

  9. 1.6

    taṇhāpaccayā upādānaṁ;

    Craving is a requirement for grasping.

  10. 1.7

    upādānapaccayā bhavo;

    Grasping is a requirement for continued existence.

  11. 1.8

    bhavapaccayā jāti;

    Continued existence is a requirement for rebirth.

  12. 1.9

    jātipaccayā jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti.

    Rebirth is a requirement for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be.

    Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti.

    That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

    Ear … nose … tongue … body …

  15. 1.12

    manañca paṭicca dhamme ca uppajjati manoviññāṇaṁ. Tiṇṇaṁ saṅgati phasso.

    Mind consciousness arises dependent on the mind and ideas. The meeting of the three is contact.

    Phassapaccayā vedanā;

    Contact is a requirement for feeling.

  17. 1.14

    vedanāpaccayā taṇhā;

    Feeling is a requirement for craving.

  18. 1.15

    taṇhāpaccayā upādānaṁ;

    When that craving fades away and ceases no residue left behind, grasping ceases.

    upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho;

    When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases.

  28. 2.6

    bhavanirodhā jātinirodho;

    When continued existence ceases, rebirth ceases.

  29. 2.7

    jātinirodhā jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā nirujjhanti.

    When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease.

  30. 2.8

    Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti …pe…

    That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.

    Tena kho pana samayena aññataro bhikkhu bhagavato upassuti ṭhito hoti.

    Now at that time a certain monk was standing listening in on the Buddha.

  39. 3.2

    Addasā kho bhagavā taṁ bhikkhuṁ upassuti ṭhitaṁ.

    The Buddha saw him

  40. 3.3

    Disvāna taṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:

    and said,

  41. 3.4

    “assosi no tvaṁ, bhikkhu, imaṁ dhammapariyāyan”ti?

    “Monk, did you hear that exposition of the teaching?”

  42. 3.5

    “Evaṁ, bhante”.

    “Yes, sir.”

  43. 3.6

    “Uggaṇhāhi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, imaṁ dhammapariyāyaṁ.

    “Learn that exposition of the teaching,

  44. 3.7

    Pariyāpuṇāhi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, imaṁ dhammapariyāyaṁ.

    memorize it,

  45. 3.8

    Dhārehi tvaṁ, bhikkhu, imaṁ dhammapariyāyaṁ.

    and remember it.

  46. 3.9

    Atthasañhitoyaṁ, bhikkhu, dhammapariyāyo ādibrahmacariyako”ti.

    That exposition of the teaching is beneficial and relevant to the fundamentals of the spiritual life.”
