Taṇhāsutta

Develop the eightfold path to abandon the three cravings. This sutta is doubled by replacing <i lang='pi' translate='no'>taṇhā</i> with another form of the same word, <i lang='pi' translate='no'>tasina</i>. This variation is found in Burmese but not Sinhalese manuscripts.

    “Tisso imā, bhikkhave, taṇhā.

    “Mendicants, there are these three cravings.

    What three?

    Kāmataṇhā, bhavataṇhā, vibhavataṇhā—

    Craving for sensual pleasures, craving for continued existence, and craving for nonexistence.

    These are the three cravings.

    Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ taṇhānaṁ abhiññāya pariññāya parikkhayāya pahānāya …pe… ayaṁ ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo bhāvetabbo.

    The noble eightfold path should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three cravings.

    Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sammādiṭṭhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ …pe… sammāsamādhiṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ.

    It’s when a mendicant develops right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go.
