Going to the Far Shore

“Sattime, bhikkhave, bojjhaṅgā bhāvitā bahulīkatā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya saṁvattanti.
“Mendicants, when these seven awakening factors are developed and cultivated they lead to going from the near shore to the far shore.

What seven?

Satisambojjhaṅgo …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo—
The awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity.

ime kho, bhikkhave, satta bojjhaṅgā bhāvitā bahulīkatā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya saṁvattantīti.
These seven awakening factors, when developed and cultivated, lead to going from the near shore to the far shore.

Appakā te manussesu,
Few are those among humans
- 2.2
ye janā pāragāmino;
who cross to the far shore.

Athāyaṁ itarā pajā,
The rest just run
- 2.4
tīramevānudhāvati.
around on the near shore.

Ye ca kho sammadakkhāte,
When the teaching is well explained,
- 3.2
dhamme dhammānuvattino;
the people who practice accordingly
- 3.3
Te janā pāramessanti,
will cross over
- 3.4
maccudheyyaṁ suduttaraṁ.
Death’s dominion so hard to pass.

Kaṇhaṁ dhammaṁ vippahāya,
Rid of dark qualities,
- 4.2
sukkaṁ bhāvetha paṇḍito;
an astute person would develop the bright.

Okā anokamāgamma,
Having left home for homelessness
- 4.4
viveke yattha dūramaṁ.
in seclusion, where joy is hard,
- 5.1
Tatrābhiratimiccheyya,
they’d long for satisfaction there.
- 5.2
hitvā kāme akiñcano;
Forsaking sensual pleasures, owning nothing,
- 5.3
Pariyodapeyya attānaṁ,
an astute person would cleanse themselves
- 5.4
cittaklesehi paṇḍito.
of mental corruptions.
- 6.1
Yesaṁ sambodhiyaṅgesu,
And those whose minds are rightly developed
- 6.2
sammā cittaṁ subhāvitaṁ;
in the awakening factors;
- 6.3
Ādānappaṭinissagge,
who, letting go of attachments,
- 6.4
anupādāya ye ratā;
delight in not grasping—
- 6.5
Khīṇāsavā jutimanto,
with defilements ended, brilliant,
- 6.6
te loke parinibbutā”ti.
they are quenched in this world.”
