“Kathaṁdassī kathaṁsīlo,
“Seeing how, behaving how,

upasantoti vuccati;
is one said to be at peace?
- 1.3
Taṁ me gotama pabrūhi,
When asked, Gotama, please tell me
- 1.4
pucchito uttamaṁ naraṁ”.
about the ultimate person.”

“Vītataṇho purā bhedā,
“Rid of craving before the breakup,”
- 2.2
(iti bhagavā)
said the Buddha,

Pubbamantamanissito;
“not dependent on the first beginning,
- 2.4
Vemajjhe nupasaṅkheyyo,
unfathomable in the middle,
- 2.5
Tassa natthi purakkhataṁ.
they are not governed by anything.

Akkodhano asantāsī,
Unangry, unafraid,
- 3.2
avikatthī akukkuco;
not boastful or regretful,
- 3.3
Mantabhāṇī anuddhato,
thoughtful in counsel, not restless—
- 3.4
sa ve vācāyato muni.
truly that sage is controlled in speech.

Nirāsatti anāgate,
Rid of attachment to the future,
- 4.2
atītaṁ nānusocati;
they don’t grieve for the past.
- 4.3
Vivekadassī phassesu,
A seer of seclusion in the midst of contacts
- 4.4
diṭṭhīsu ca na nīyati.
is not led astray among views.
- 5.1
Patilīno akuhako,
Withdrawn, free of deceit,
- 5.2
apihālu amaccharī;
they’re not envious or stingy,
- 5.3
Appagabbho ajeguccho,
nor rude or disgusting,
- 5.4
pesuṇeyye ca no yuto.
or given to slander.
- 6.1
Sātiyesu anassāvī,
Not swept up in pleasures,
- 6.2
atimāne ca no yuto;
or given to arrogance,
- 6.3
Saṇho ca paṭibhānavā,
they’re gentle and articulate,
- 6.4
na saddho na virajjati.
neither hungering nor growing dispassionate.
- 7.1
Lābhakamyā na sikkhati,
Not training for desire for profit,
- 7.2
alābhe ca na kuppati;
nor getting annoyed at lack of profit;
- 7.3
Aviruddho ca taṇhāya,
they are not hostile due to craving,
- 7.4
rasesu nānugijjhati.
for they are not greedy for flavors.
- 8.1
Upekkhako sadā sato,
Equanimous, ever mindful,
- 8.2
na loke maññate samaṁ;
they never conceive themselves in the world
- 8.3
Na visesī na nīceyyo,
as equal, special, or less than;
- 8.4
tassa no santi ussadā.
they have no pretensions.
- 9.1
Yassa nissayanā natthi,
They have no dependencies,
- 9.2
ñatvā dhammaṁ anissito;
understanding the teaching, they are independent.
- 9.3
Bhavāya vibhavāya vā,
No craving is found in them
- 9.4
taṇhā yassa na vijjati.
to continue existence or to end it.
- 10.1
Taṁ brūmi upasantoti,
I declare them to be at peace,
- 10.2
Kāmesu anapekkhinaṁ;
unconcerned for sensual pleasures.
- 10.3
Ganthā tassa na vijjanti,
No ties are found in them,
- 10.4
Atarī so visattikaṁ.
they have crossed over clinging.
- 11.1
Na tassa puttā pasavo,
They have no children or livestock,
- 11.2
Khettaṁ vatthuñca vijjati;
nor possess fields or lands.
- 11.3
Attā vāpi nirattā vā,
No picking up or putting down
- 11.4
Na tasmiṁ upalabbhati.
is found in them.
- 12.1
Yena naṁ vajjuṁ puthujjanā,
That by which one might describe
- 12.2
Atho samaṇabrāhmaṇā;
an ordinary person or ascetics and brahmins
- 12.3
Taṁ tassa apurakkhataṁ,
has no importance to them,
- 12.4
Tasmā vādesu nejati.
which is why they’re unperturbed by words.
- 13.1
Vītagedho amaccharī,
Freed of greed, not stingy,
- 13.2
Na ussesu vadate muni;
a sage doesn’t speak of themselves as being
- 13.3
Na samesu na omesu,
among superiors, inferiors, or equals.
- 13.4
Kappaṁ neti akappiyo.
One not prone to creation
does not return to creation. - 14.1
Yassa loke sakaṁ natthi,
They who have nothing in the world of their own
- 14.2
Asatā ca na socati;
do not grieve for that which is not,
- 14.3
Dhammesu ca na gacchati,
or drift among the teachings;
- 14.4
Sa ve santoti vuccatī”ti.
that’s who is said to be at peace.”
