    “Jhāyiṁ virajamāsīnaṁ,

    “To the meditator, rid of hopes,”

  4. 1.2

    (iccāyasmā udayo)

    said Venerable Udaya,

  5. 1.3

    Katakiccaṁ anāsavaṁ;

    “who has completed the task, is free of defilements,

  6. 1.4

    Pāraguṁ sabbadhammānaṁ,

    and has gone beyond all things,

  7. 1.5

    Atthi pañhena āgamaṁ;

    I have come seeking with a question.

  8. 1.6

    Aññāvimokkhaṁ pabrūhi,

    Tell me the liberation by enlightenment,

  9. 1.7

    Avijjāya pabhedanaṁ”.

    the smashing of ignorance.”

    “Pahānaṁ kāmacchandānaṁ,

    “The giving up of both”

    (udayāti bhagavā)

    replied the Buddha,

  12. 2.3

    Domanassāna cūbhayaṁ;

    “sensual desires and displeasures;

    Thinassa ca panūdanaṁ,

    the casting aside of dullness,

  14. 2.5

    Kukkuccānaṁ nivāraṇaṁ.

    and the prevention of remorse;

  15. 3.1

    Upekkhāsatisaṁsuddhaṁ,

    pure equanimity and mindfulness,

  16. 3.2

    dhammatakkapurejavaṁ;

    preceded by investigation of principles—

  17. 3.3

    Aññāvimokkhaṁ pabrūmi,

    this, I declare, is liberation by enlightenment,

  18. 3.4

    avijjāya pabhedanaṁ”.

    the smashing of ignorance.”

    “Kiṁsu saṁyojano loko,

    “What fetters the world?

  20. 4.2

    kiṁsu tassa vicāraṇaṁ;

    How does it travel about?

  21. 4.3

    Kissassa vippahānena,

    With the giving up of what

  22. 4.4

    nibbānaṁ iti vuccati”.

    is extinguishment spoken of?”

    “Nandisaṁyojano loko,

    “Delight fetters the world.

  24. 5.2

    vitakkassa vicāraṇaṁ;

    It travels about by means of thought.

  25. 5.3

    Taṇhāya vippahānena,

    With the giving up of craving

  26. 5.4

    nibbānaṁ iti vuccati”.

    extinguishment is spoken of.”

    “Kathaṁ satassa carato,

    “For one living mindfully,

  28. 6.2

    viññāṇaṁ uparujjhati;

    how does consciousness cease?

  29. 6.3

    Bhagavantaṁ puṭṭhumāgamma,

    We’ve come to ask the worthy sir:

    taṁ suṇoma vaco tava”.

    let us hear what you say.”

    “Ajjhattañca bahiddhā ca,

    “Not taking pleasure in feeling

  32. 7.2

    Vedanaṁ nābhinandato;

    internally and externally—

  33. 7.3

    Evaṁ satassa carato,

    for one living mindfully,

  34. 7.4

    Viññāṇaṁ uparujjhatī”ti.

    that’s how consciousness ceases.”

  35. 7.5

    Udayamāṇavapucchā terasamā.
