“Kenassu nivuto loko,
“By what is the world shrouded?”
- 1.2
(iccāyasmā ajito)
said Venerable Ajita.
- 1.3
Kenassu nappakāsati;
“Why does it not shine?
- 1.4
Kissābhilepanaṁ brūsi,
Tell me, what is its sullying?
- 1.5
Kiṁsu tassa mahabbhayaṁ”.
What is its greatest fear?”
- 2.1
“Avijjāya nivuto loko,
“The world is shrouded in ignorance.”
- 2.2
(ajitāti bhagavā)
replied the Buddha.
- 2.3
Vevicchā pamādā nappakāsati;
“Avarice and negligence make it not shine.
- 2.4
Jappābhilepanaṁ brūmi,
Muttered prayer is its sullying, I say.
- 2.5
Dukkhamassa mahabbhayaṁ”.
Suffering is its greatest fear.”

“Savanti sabbadhi sotā,
“The streams flow everywhere,”

(iccāyasmā ajito)
said Venerable Ajita.

Sotānaṁ kiṁ nivāraṇaṁ;
“What is there to block them?
- 3.4
Sotānaṁ saṁvaraṁ brūhi,
And tell me the restraint of streams—
- 3.5
Kena sotā pidhiyyare”.
by what are they locked out?”

“Yāni sotāni lokasmiṁ,
“The streams in the world,”
- 4.2
(ajitāti bhagavā)
replied the Buddha,
- 4.3
Sati tesaṁ nivāraṇaṁ;
“are blocked by mindfulness.
- 4.4
Sotānaṁ saṁvaraṁ brūmi,
I tell you the restraint of streams—
- 4.5
Paññāyete pidhiyyare”.
they are locked out by wisdom.”

“Paññā ceva sati yañca,
“That wisdom and mindfulness,”

(iccāyasmā ajito)
said Venerable Ajita,
- 5.3
Nāmarūpañca mārisa;
“and that which is name and form, good fellow;
- 5.4
Etaṁ me puṭṭho pabrūhi,
when questioned, please tell me of this:

Katthetaṁ uparujjhati”.

“Yametaṁ pañhaṁ apucchi,
“This question which you have asked,
- 6.2
ajita taṁ vadāmi te;
I shall answer you, Ajita.

Yattha nāmañca rūpañca,
Where name and form

asesaṁ uparujjhati;
cease with no residue left behind—

Viññāṇassa nirodhena,
with the cessation of consciousness,
- 6.6
etthetaṁ uparujjhati”.

“Ye ca saṅkhātadhammāse,
“There are those who have appraised the teaching,
- 7.2
ye ca sekhā puthū idha;
and many kinds of trainees here.
- 7.3
Tesaṁ me nipako iriyaṁ,
Now you, being alert, are asked
- 7.4
puṭṭho pabrūhi mārisa”.
to tell me their behavior, good fellow.”

“Kāmesu nābhigijjheyya,
“Not greedy for sensual pleasures,
- 8.2
Manasānāvilo siyā;
their mind would be unclouded.
- 8.3
Kusalo sabbadhammānaṁ,
Skilled in all things,
- 8.4
Sato bhikkhu paribbaje”ti.
a mendicant would wander mindful.”
