Chapter One
Mahākappinattheragāthā
Mahākappina
- 1.1
“Anāgataṁ yo paṭikacca passati,
If you’re prepared for the future,
- 1.2
Hitañca atthaṁ ahitañca taṁ dvayaṁ;
both the good and the bad,
- 1.3
Viddesino tassa hitesino vā,
then those, whether enemies or well-wishers,
- 1.4
Randhaṁ na passanti samekkhamānā.
who examine you for weakness will see none.
- 2.1
Ānāpānasatī yassa,
One who has fulfilled, developed,
- 2.2
paripuṇṇā subhāvitā;
and gradually consolidated
- 2.3
Anupubbaṁ paricitā,
mindfulness of breathing
- 2.4
yathā buddhena desitā;
as it was taught by the Buddha:
- 2.5
Somaṁ lokaṁ pabhāseti,
they shine on this world,
- 2.6
abbhā muttova candimā.
like the moon freed from clouds.
- 3.1
Odātaṁ vata me cittaṁ,
Yes, my mind is clean,
- 3.2
appamāṇaṁ subhāvitaṁ;
limitless and well-developed;
- 3.3
Nibbiddhaṁ paggahītañca,
it has broken through and been uplifted—
- 3.4
sabbā obhāsate disā.
it radiates in every direction.
- 4.1
Jīvate vāpi sappañño,
A wise person lives on
- 4.2
api vittaparikkhayo;
even after loss of wealth;
- 4.3
Paññāya ca alābhena,
but without gaining wisdom,
- 4.4
vittavāpi na jīvati.
even a rich person doesn’t really live.
- 5.1
Paññā sutavinicchinī,
Wisdom questions what is learned;
- 5.2
Paññā kittisilokavaddhanī;
wisdom grows fame and reputation;
- 5.3
Paññāsahito naro idha,
a person united with wisdom
- 5.4
Api dukkhesu sukhāni vindati.
finds happiness even among sufferings.
- 6.1
Nāyaṁ ajjatano dhammo,
It’s not a teaching just for today;
- 6.2
nacchero napi abbhuto;
it isn’t incredible or amazing.
- 6.3
Yattha jāyetha mīyetha,
When you’re born, you die—
- 6.4
tattha kiṁ viya abbhutaṁ.
what’s amazing about that?
- 7.1
Anantaraṁ hi jātassa,
For anyone who is born,
- 7.2
jīvitā maraṇaṁ dhuvaṁ;
death always follows after life.
- 7.3
Jātā jātā marantīdha,
Everyone who is born here dies here;
- 7.4
evaṁdhammā hi pāṇino.
such is the nature of living creatures.
- 8.1
Na hetadatthāya matassa hoti,
The things that are useful for the living
- 8.2
Yaṁ jīvitatthaṁ paraporisānaṁ;
are of no use for the dead—not fame, not celebrity,
- 8.3
Matamhi ruṇṇaṁ na yaso na lokyaṁ,
not praise by ascetics and brahmins.
- 8.4
Na vaṇṇitaṁ samaṇabrāhmaṇehi.
For the dead, there is only weeping.
- 9.1
Cakkhuṁ sarīraṁ upahanti tena,
And weeping impairs the eye and the body;
- 9.2
Nihīyati vaṇṇabalaṁ matī ca;
complexion, strength, and intelligence decline.
- 9.3
Ānandino tassa disā bhavanti,
Your enemies rejoice;
- 9.4
Hitesino nāssa sukhī bhavanti.
but your well-wishers are not happy.
- 10.1
Tasmā hi iccheyya kule vasante,
So you should wish that those who stay in your family
- 10.2
Medhāvino ceva bahussute ca;
have intelligence and learning,
- 10.3
Yesaṁ hi paññāvibhavena kiccaṁ,
and do their duty through the power of wisdom,
- 10.4
Taranti nāvāya nadiṁva puṇṇan”ti.
just as you’d cross a full river by boat.
- 10.5
