Khadiravaniyarevatattheragāthā
Revata of the Acacia Wood
- 1.1
“Yadā ahaṁ pabbajito,
Since I’ve gone forth
- 1.2
agārasmānagāriyaṁ;
from the lay life to homelessness,
- 1.3
Nābhijānāmi saṅkappaṁ,
I’ve not been aware of any thought
- 1.4
anariyaṁ dosasaṁhitaṁ.
that is ignoble and hateful.
- 2.1
‘Ime haññantu vajjhantu,
“May these beings be killed!
- 2.2
dukkhaṁ pappontu pāṇino’;
May they be slaughtered! May they suffer!”—
- 2.3
Saṅkappaṁ nābhijānāmi,
I’ve not been aware of any such thought
- 2.4
imasmiṁ dīghamantare.
in all this long while.
- 3.1
Mettañca abhijānāmi,
I have been aware of loving-kindness,
- 3.2
appamāṇaṁ subhāvitaṁ;
limitless and well-developed;
- 3.3
Anupubbaṁ paricitaṁ,
gradually consolidated
- 3.4
yathā buddhena desitaṁ.
as it was taught by the Buddha.
- 4.1
Sabbamitto sabbasakho,
I’m friend and comrade to all,
- 4.2
sabbabhūtānukampako;
sympathetic for all beings!
- 4.3
Mettacittañca bhāvemi,
I develop a mind of love,
- 4.4
abyāpajjarato sadā.
always delighting in harmlessness.
- 5.1
Asaṁhīraṁ asaṅkuppaṁ,
The unfaltering, the unshakable:
- 5.2
cittaṁ āmodayāmahaṁ;
I gladden that mind.
- 5.3
Brahmavihāraṁ bhāvemi,
I develop a divine meditation,
- 5.4
akāpurisasevitaṁ.
which reprobates do not cultivate.
- 6.1
Avitakkaṁ samāpanno,
When in a meditation free of placing the mind,
- 6.2
sammāsambuddhasāvako;
a disciple of the Buddha
- 6.3
Ariyena tuṇhībhāvena,
is at that moment blessed
- 6.4
upeto hoti tāvade.
with noble silence.
- 7.1
Yathāpi pabbato selo,
As a rocky mountain
- 7.2
acalo suppatiṭṭhito;
is unwavering and well grounded,
- 7.3
Evaṁ mohakkhayā bhikkhu,
so when delusion ends,
- 7.4
pabbatova na vedhati.
a monk, like a mountain, doesn’t tremble.
- 8.1
Anaṅgaṇassa posassa,
To the man who has not a blemish,
- 8.2
niccaṁ sucigavesino;
who is always seeking purity,
- 8.3
Vālaggamattaṁ pāpassa,
even a hair-tip of evil
- 8.4
abbhamattaṁva khāyati.
seems as big as a stormcloud.
- 9.1
Nagaraṁ yathā paccantaṁ,
As a frontier city
- 9.2
guttaṁ santarabāhiraṁ;
is guarded inside and out,
- 9.3
Evaṁ gopetha attānaṁ,
so you should ward yourselves—
- 9.4
khaṇo vo mā upaccagā.
don’t let the moment pass you by.
- 10.1
Nābhinandāmi maraṇaṁ,
I don’t long for death;
- 10.2
nābhinandāmi jīvitaṁ;
I don’t long for life;
- 10.3
Kālañca paṭikaṅkhāmi,
I await my time,
- 10.4
nibbisaṁ bhatako yathā.
like a worker waiting for their wages.
- 11.1
Nābhinandāmi maraṇaṁ,
I don’t long for death;
- 11.2
… pe
I don’t long for life;
- 11.3
…
I await my time,
- 11.4
sampajāno patissato.
aware and mindful.
- 12.1
Pariciṇṇo mayā satthā,
I’ve served the Teacher
- 12.2
kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ;
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
- 12.3
Ohito garuko bhāro,
The heavy burden is laid down,
- 12.4
bhavanetti samūhatā.
the leash to existence is eradicated.
- 13.1
Yassa catthāya pabbajito,
I’ve attained the goal
- 13.2
agārasmānagāriyaṁ;
for the sake of which I went forth
- 13.3
So me attho anuppatto,
from the lay life to homelessness—
- 13.4
sabbasaṁyojanakkhayo.
the ending of all fetters.
- 14.1
Sampādethappamādena,
Persist with diligence:
- 14.2
esā me anusāsanī;
this is my instruction.
- 14.3
Handāhaṁ parinibbissaṁ,
Come, I’ll be fully quenched—
- 14.4
vippamuttomhi sabbadhī”ti.
I’m liberated in every way.
- 14.5
