  14. 3.2

    hitāya ahitāya ca;

    can lead to both welfare and harm.

  15. 3.3

    Arakkhitāni ahitāya,

    Unguarded they lead to harm;

  16. 3.4

    rakkhitāni hitāya ca.

    guarded they lead to welfare.

  17. 4.1

    Indriyāneva sārakkhaṁ,

    By protecting the faculties,

  18. 4.2

  22. 5.2

    gacchantaṁ anivārayaṁ;

    among sights without check,

  23. 5.3

    Anādīnavadassāvī,

    not seeing the danger,

  24. 5.4

    so dukkhā na hi muccati.

    you’re not freed from suffering.

  25. 6.1

    Sotindriyañce saddesu,

    If your ear wanders

  26. 6.2

    gacchantaṁ anivārayaṁ;

    among sounds without check,

  27. 6.3

    Anādīnavadassāvī,

    not seeing the danger,

  28. 6.4

    so dukkhā na hi muccati.

    you’re not freed from suffering.

  29. 7.1

    Anissaraṇadassāvī,

    you indulge in a smell,

  31. 7.3

    Na so muccati dukkhamhā,

    you’re not freed from suffering,

  32. 7.4

    gandhesu adhimucchito.

    being besotted by smells.

  33. 8.1

    Ambilaṁ madhuraggañca,

    Recollecting the sour,

  34. 8.2

    tittakaggamanussaraṁ;

    the superbly sweet and the bitter,

  35. 8.3

    Rasataṇhāya gadhito,

    captivated by craving for taste,

  36. 8.4

    hadayaṁ nāvabujjhati.

    you don’t understand the heart.

  37. 9.1

    Subhānyappaṭikūlāni,

    and pleasurable touches,

  39. 9.3

    Ratto rāgādhikaraṇaṁ,

    full of desire, you experience

    sabbehetehi pañcahi.

    because of all five.

  45. 11.1

    Pubbalohitasampuṇṇaṁ,

    This body is full of pus and blood,

  46. 11.2

    bahussa kuṇapassa ca;

    it’s home to many carcasses;

  47. 11.3

    Naravīrakataṁ vagguṁ,

    but cunning people decorate it

  48. 11.4

    samuggamiva cittitaṁ.

    like a lovely painted casket.

  49. 12.1

    Kaṭukaṁ madhurassādaṁ,

    You don’t understand that

  50. 12.2

    piyanibandhanaṁ dukhaṁ;

    the sweetness of honey turns bitter,

  51. 12.3

    Khuraṁva madhunā littaṁ,

    and the bonds to those we love cause pain,

  52. 12.4

    ullihaṁ nāvabujjhati.

    like a razor’s edge smeared with honey.

  53. 13.1

    Itthirūpe itthisare,

    phoṭṭhabbepi ca itthiyā;

    for the voice and the smells of a woman,

  55. 13.3

    Itthigandhesu sāratto,

    sandanti pañca pañcasu;

    flow from five to five.

  59. 14.3

    Tesamāvaraṇaṁ kātuṁ,

    Whoever, being energetic,

  60. 14.4

    yo sakkoti vīriyavā.

    is able to curb these,

  61. 15.1

    So atthavā so dhammaṭṭho,

    purposeful and firm in principle,

  79. 19.3

    Indriyānindriyeheva,
