“Ayoge yuñjamattānaṁ,
When a person, wishing for a certain outcome,
- 1.2
puriso kiccamicchako;
applies themselves where they ought not;
- 1.3
Carañce nādhigaccheyya,
not achieving what they worked for,
- 1.4
‘taṁ me dubbhagalakkhaṇaṁ’.
they say: “That’s a sign of my bad luck.”

Abbūḷhaṁ aghagataṁ vijitaṁ,
When a misfortune is extracted and beaten,
- 2.2
Ekañce ossajeyya kalīva siyā;
to surrender it in part would be like losing at dice;
- 2.3
Sabbānipi ce ossajeyya andhova siyā,
but to surrender it all you’d have to be blind,
- 2.4
Samavisamassa adassanato.
not seeing the even and the uneven.

Yañhi kayirā tañhi vade,
You should only say what you would do;
- 3.2
yaṁ na kayirā na taṁ vade;
you shouldn’t say what you wouldn’t do.
- 3.3
Akarontaṁ bhāsamānaṁ,
The wise will recognize
- 3.4
parijānanti paṇḍitā.
one who talks without doing.
- 4.1
Yathāpi ruciraṁ pupphaṁ,
Just like a glorious flower
- 4.2
vaṇṇavantaṁ agandhakaṁ;
that’s colorful but lacks fragrance;
- 4.3
Evaṁ subhāsitā vācā,
well-spoken speech is fruitless
- 4.4
aphalā hoti akubbato.
for one who does not act on it.
- 5.1
Yathāpi ruciraṁ pupphaṁ,
Just like a glorious flower
- 5.2
Vaṇṇavantaṁ sugandhakaṁ;
that’s both colorful and fragrant,
- 5.3
Evaṁ subhāsitā vācā,
well-spoken speech is fruitful
- 5.4
Saphalā hoti kubbato”ti.
for one who acts on it.
