Brahmadatta

“Akkodhassa kuto kodho,
Whence anger for one free of anger,
- 1.2
dantassa samajīvino;
tamed, living justly,
- 1.3
Sammadaññāvimuttassa,
freed by right knowledge,
- 1.4
upasantassa tādino.
peaceful and unaffected?
- 2.1
Tasseva tena pāpiyo,
When you get angry at an angry person
- 2.2
yo kuddhaṁ paṭikujjhati;
you just make things worse for yourself.
- 2.3
Kuddhaṁ appaṭikujjhanto,
When you don’t get angry at an angry person
- 2.4
saṅgāmaṁ jeti dujjayaṁ.
you win a battle hard to win.

Ubhinnamatthaṁ carati,
When you know that the other is angry,
- 3.2
attano ca parassa ca;
you act for the good of both
- 3.3
Paraṁ saṅkupitaṁ ñatvā,
yourself and the other
- 3.4
yo sato upasammati.
if you’re mindful and stay calm.

Ubhinnaṁ tikicchantaṁ taṁ,
People inexpert in the teaching
- 4.2
attano ca parassa ca;
consider one who heals both
- 4.3
Janā maññanti bāloti,
oneself and the other
- 4.4
ye dhammassa akovidā.
to be a fool.
- 5.1
Uppajje te sace kodho,
If anger arises in you,
- 5.2
āvajja kakacūpamaṁ;
reflect on the simile of the saw;
- 5.3
Uppajje ce rase taṇhā,
if craving for flavors arises in you,
- 5.4
puttamaṁsūpamaṁ sara.
remember the simile of the child’s flesh.
- 6.1
Sace dhāvati cittaṁ te,
If your mind runs off
- 6.2
kāmesu ca bhavesu ca;
to sensual pleasures and future lives,
- 6.3
Khippaṁ niggaṇha satiyā,
quickly curb it with mindfulness,
- 6.4
kiṭṭhādaṁ viya duppasun”ti.
as one would curb a greedy cow eating grain.
