Sarabhaṅga
- 1.1
“Sare hatthehi bhañjitvā,
I broke the reeds off with my hands,
- 1.2
katvāna kuṭimacchisaṁ;
made a hut, and stayed there.
- 1.3
Tena me sarabhaṅgoti,
That’s how I became known
- 1.4
nāmaṁ sammutiyā ahu.
as “Reed-breaker”.
- 2.1
Na mayhaṁ kappate ajja,
But now it’s not appropriate
- 2.2
sare hatthehi bhañjituṁ;
for me to break reeds with my hands.
- 2.3
Sikkhāpadā no paññattā,
The training rules have been laid down for us
- 2.4
gotamena yasassinā.
by Gotama the renowned.
- 3.1
Sakalaṁ samattaṁ rogaṁ,
Previously, I, Sarabhaṅga,
- 3.2
Sarabhaṅgo nāddasaṁ pubbe;
didn’t see the disease in its entirety.
- 3.3
Soyaṁ rogo diṭṭho,
But now I have seen the disease,

Kakusandhakoṇāgamano ca kassapo,
by Sikhī, Vessabhū,
- 4.4
Tenañjasena agamāsi gotamo.
Kakusandha, Koṇāgamana, and Kassapa.
- 5.1
Vītataṇhā anādānā,
These seven Buddhas have plunged into the ending,

free of craving, without grasping,
- 5.3
Yehāyaṁ desito dhammo,
having become Dhamma, unaffected.
- 5.4
dhammabhūtehi tādibhi.
They have taught this Dhamma
- 6.1
Cattāri ariyasaccāni,
out of compassion for living creatures—
- 6.2
anukampāya pāṇinaṁ;
suffering, origin, path,
- 6.3
Dukkhaṁ samudayo maggo,
and cessation, the ending of suffering.
- 6.4
nirodho dukkhasaṅkhayo.
In these four noble truths,
- 7.1
Yasmiṁ nivattate dukkhaṁ,
the endless suffering of transmigration
- 7.2
saṁsārasmiṁ anantakaṁ;
finally comes to an end.
- 7.3
Bhedā imassa kāyassa,
When the body breaks up,
- 7.4
jīvitassa ca saṅkhayā;
and life comes to an end,
- 7.5
Añño punabbhavo natthi,
there are no future lives;
- 7.6
suvimuttomhi sabbadhī”ti.
I’m everywhere well freed.

Bhaddo thero ca sopāko,
