Mahākaccāyanattheragāthā
Mahākaccāna
- 1.1
“Kammaṁ bahukaṁ na kāraye,
Don’t get involved in lots of work,
- 1.2
Parivajjeyya janaṁ na uyyame;
avoid people, and don’t try to acquire things.
- 1.3
So ussukko rasānugiddho,
If you’re eager and greedy for flavors,
- 1.4
Atthaṁ riñcati yo sukhādhivāho.
you’ll miss the goal that brings such happiness.
- 2.1
Paṅkoti hi naṁ avedayuṁ,
They know it really is a bog,
- 2.2
Yāyaṁ vandanapūjanā kulesu;
this homage and veneration in respectable families.
- 2.3
Sukhumaṁ sallaṁ durubbahaṁ,
Honor is a subtle dart, hard to extract,
- 2.4
Sakkāro kāpurisena dujjaho.
and hard for a reprobate to give up.
- 3.1
Na parassupanidhāya,
The deeds of a mortal aren’t bad
- 3.2
kammaṁ maccassa pāpakaṁ;
because of what others do.
- 3.3
Attanā taṁ na seveyya,
You yourself should not do bad,
- 3.4
kammabandhū hi mātiyā.
for mortals have deeds as their kin.
- 4.1
Na pare vacanā coro,
You’re not a bandit because of what someone says,
- 4.2
na pare vacanā muni;
you’re not a sage because of what someone says;
- 4.3
Attā ca naṁ yathāvedi,
but as you know yourself,
- 4.4
devāpi naṁ tathā vidū.
so the gods will know you.
- 5.1
Pare ca na vijānanti,
When others do not understand,
- 5.2
mayamettha yamāmase;
let us, who do understand this,
- 5.3
Ye ca tattha vijānanti,
restrain ourselves in this regard;
- 5.4
tato sammanti medhagā.
for that is how conflicts are laid to rest.
- 6.1
Jīvate vāpi sappañño,
A wise person lives on
- 6.2
api vittaparikkhayo;
even after loss of wealth;
- 6.3
Paññāya ca alābhena,
but without gaining wisdom,
- 6.4
vittavāpi na jīvati.
even a rich person doesn’t really live.
- 7.1
Sabbaṁ suṇāti sotena,
All is heard with the ear,
- 7.2
sabbaṁ passati cakkhunā;
all is seen with the eye;
- 7.3
Na ca diṭṭhaṁ sutaṁ dhīro,
the attentive ought not discard
- 7.4
sabbaṁ ujjhitumarahati.
all that is seen and heard.
- 8.1
Cakkhumāssa yathā andho,
Though you have eyes, be as if blind;
- 8.2
sotavā badhiro yathā;
though you have ears, be as if deaf;
- 8.3
Paññavāssa yathā mūgo,
though you have wisdom, be as if dumb;
- 8.4
balavā dubbaloriva;
though you have strength, be as if feeble.
- 8.5
Atha atthe samuppanne,
And when issues come up
- 8.6
sayetha matasāyikan”ti.
lie as still as a corpse.
- 8.7
… Mahākaccāyano thero ….
