The Chapter on Awakening

This chapter begins with a series of discourses set immediately after the Buddha’s awakening, which are shared with the first chapter of the Khandhakas. It establishes the fundamental thesis of Buddhism: that awakening is possible through one’s own efforts. Each discourse deals with the idea of the true “brahmin”, defined not according to hereditary caste, but freedom from defilements.
