Sectarian Tenets

The beliefs that everything is caused by past karma, by a creator God, or by chance all lead to inaction. The Buddha teaches dependent origination.

Imāni cha phassāyatanānīti, bhikkhave, mayā dhammo desito aniggahito asaṅkiliṭṭho anupavajjo appaṭikuṭṭho samaṇehi brāhmaṇehi viññūhīti.

‘“These are the six fields of contact”: this is the Dhamma I’ve taught …’

  57. 11.2

    Iti kho panetaṁ vuttaṁ.

    That’s what I said,

  58. 11.3

    Kiñcetaṁ paṭicca vuttaṁ?

but why did I say it?

  59. 11.4

    Chayimāni, bhikkhave, phassāyatanāni—

There are these six fields of contact:

  60. 11.5

cakkhu phassāyatanaṁ, sotaṁ phassāyatanaṁ, ghānaṁ phassāyatanaṁ, jivhā phassāyatanaṁ, kāyo phassāyatanaṁ, mano phassāyatanaṁ.

eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind contact.

  61. 11.6

  62. 11.7

Iti yaṁ taṁ vuttaṁ, idametaṁ paṭicca vuttaṁ.

That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.

  63. 12.1

Ime aṭṭhārasa manopavicārāti, bhikkhave, mayā dhammo desito aniggahito asaṅkiliṭṭho anupavajjo appaṭikuṭṭho samaṇehi brāhmaṇehi viññūhīti.

‘“These are the eighteen mental preoccupations”: this is the Dhamma I’ve taught …’

  64. 12.2

    Iti kho panetaṁ vuttaṁ.

    This is what I said,

  65. 12.3

    Kiñcetaṁ paṭicca vuttaṁ?

but why did I say it?

  66. 12.4

Cakkhunā rūpaṁ disvā somanassaṭṭhāniyaṁ rūpaṁ upavicarati domanassaṭṭhāniyaṁ rūpaṁ upavicarati upekkhāṭṭhāniyaṁ rūpaṁ upavicarati,

Seeing a sight with their eyes, one is preoccupied with a sight that’s a basis for happiness or sadness or equanimity.

  67. 12.5

    sotena saddaṁ sutvā …

Hearing a sound with their ears …

  68. 12.6

    ghānena gandhaṁ ghāyitvā …

Smelling an odor with their nose …

  69. 12.7

    jivhāya rasaṁ sāyitvā …

Tasting a flavor with their tongue …

  70. 12.8

    kāyena phoṭṭhabbaṁ phusitvā …

Encountering a touch with their body …

  71. 12.9

manasā dhammaṁ viññāya somanassaṭṭhāniyaṁ dhammaṁ upavicarati domanassaṭṭhāniyaṁ dhammaṁ upavicarati upekkhāṭṭhāniyaṁ dhammaṁ upavicarati.

Becoming conscious of an idea with their mind, one is preoccupied with an idea that’s a basis for happiness or sadness or equanimity.

  72. 12.10

  73. 12.11

Iti yaṁ taṁ vuttaṁ, idametaṁ paṭicca vuttaṁ.

That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.

  74. 13.1

Imāni cattāri ariyasaccānīti, bhikkhave, mayā dhammo desito aniggahito asaṅkiliṭṭho anupavajjo appaṭikuṭṭho samaṇehi brāhmaṇehi viññūhīti.

‘“These are the four noble truths”: this is the Dhamma I’ve taught …’

  75. 13.2

    Iti kho panetaṁ vuttaṁ.

    That’s what I said,

  76. 13.3

    Kiñcetaṁ paṭicca vuttaṁ?

but why did I say it?

  77. 13.4

    Channaṁ, bhikkhave, dhātūnaṁ upādāya gabbhassāvakkanti hoti;

Supported by the six elements, an embryo is conceived.

  78. 13.5

okkantiyā sati nāmarūpaṁ, nāmarūpapaccayā saḷāyatanaṁ, saḷāyatanapaccayā phasso, phassapaccayā vedanā.

When it is conceived, there are name and form. Name and form are requirements for the six sense fields. The six sense fields are requirements for contact. Contact is a requirement for feeling.

  79. 13.6

Vediyamānassa kho panāhaṁ, bhikkhave, idaṁ dukkhanti paññapemi, ayaṁ dukkhasamudayoti paññapemi, ayaṁ dukkhanirodhoti paññapemi, ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadāti paññapemi.

It’s for one who feels that I declare: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’.

  80. 14.1

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ?

And what is the noble truth of suffering?

  81. 14.2

Jātipi dukkhā, jarāpi dukkhā, (…) maraṇampi dukkhaṁ, sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsāpi dukkhā, appiyehi sampayogo dukkho, piyehi vippayogo dukkho, yampicchaṁ na labhati tampi dukkhaṁ. Saṅkhittena pañcupādānakkhandhā dukkhā.

Rebirth is suffering; old age is suffering; death is suffering; sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress are suffering; being coupled with the disliked is suffering; separation from the liked is suffering; not getting what you wish for is suffering. In brief, the five grasping aggregates are suffering.

  82. 14.3

    Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ.

This is called the noble truth of suffering.

  83. 15.1

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, dukkhasamudayaṁ ariyasaccaṁ?

And what is the noble truth of the origin of suffering?

  84. 15.2

    Avijjāpaccayā saṅkhārā,

Ignorance is a requirement for choices.

  85. 15.3

    saṅkhārapaccayā viññāṇaṁ,

Choices are a requirement for consciousness.

    viññāṇapaccayā nāmarūpaṁ,

Consciousness is a requirement for name and form.

  87. 15.5

    nāmarūpapaccayā saḷāyatanaṁ,

Name and form are requirements for the six sense fields.

  88. 15.6

    saḷāyatanapaccayā phasso,

The six sense fields are requirements for contact.

  89. 15.7

    phassapaccayā vedanā,

Contact is a requirement for feeling.

  90. 15.8

    vedanāpaccayā taṇhā,

Feeling is a requirement for craving.

  91. 15.9

    taṇhāpaccayā upādānaṁ,

Craving is a requirement for grasping.

  92. 15.10

    upādānapaccayā bhavo,

Grasping is a requirement for continued existence.

  93. 15.11

    bhavapaccayā jāti,

Continued existence is a requirement for rebirth.

  94. 15.12

    jātipaccayā jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti.

Rebirth is a requirement for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be.

  95. 15.13

    Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti.

That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

  96. 15.14

    Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkhasamudayaṁ ariyasaccaṁ.

This is called the noble truth of the origin of suffering.

  97. 16.1

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, dukkhanirodhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ?

And what is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering?

  98. 16.2

    Avijjāya tveva asesavirāganirodhā saṅkhāranirodho,

When ignorance fades away and ceases no residue left behind, choices cease.

  99. 16.3

    saṅkhāranirodhā viññāṇanirodho,

    When choices cease, consciousness ceases.

  100. 16.4

    viññāṇanirodhā nāmarūpanirodho,

When consciousness ceases, name and form cease.

  101. 16.5

    nāmarūpanirodhā saḷāyatananirodho,

When name and form cease, the six sense fields cease.

  102. 16.6

    saḷāyatananirodhā phassanirodho,

When the six sense fields cease, contact ceases.

  103. 16.7

    phassanirodhā vedanānirodho,

    When contact ceases, feeling ceases.

  104. 16.8

    vedanānirodhā taṇhānirodho,

    When feeling ceases, craving ceases.

  105. 16.9

    taṇhānirodhā upādānanirodho,

    When craving ceases, grasping ceases.

  106. 16.10

    upādānanirodhā bhavanirodho,

When grasping ceases, continued existence ceases.

  107. 16.11

    bhavanirodhā jātinirodho,

When continued existence ceases, rebirth ceases.

  108. 16.12

    jātinirodhā jarāmaraṇaṁ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā nirujjhanti.

When rebirth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress cease.

  109. 16.13

    Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti.

That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.

  110. 16.14

    Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkhanirodhaṁ ariyasaccaṁ.

This is called the noble truth of the cessation of suffering.

  111. 17.1

    Katamañca, bhikkhave, dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā ariyasaccaṁ?

And what is the noble truth of the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering?

  112. 17.2

    Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—

It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:

  113. 17.3

sammādiṭṭhi, sammāsaṅkappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājīvo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhi.

right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.

  114. 17.4

Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā ariyasaccaṁ.

‘Imāni cattāri ariyasaccānī’ti, bhikkhave, mayā dhammo desito aniggahito asaṅkiliṭṭho anupavajjo appaṭikuṭṭho samaṇehi brāhmaṇehi viññūhīti.

‘“These are the four noble truths”: this is the Dhamma I’ve taught that is irrefutable, uncorrupted, beyond reproach, and is not scorned by sensible ascetics and brahmins.’

  116. 17.6

Iti yaṁ taṁ vuttaṁ idametaṁ paṭicca vuttan”ti.

That’s what I said, and this is why I said it.”

  117. 17.7

    Paṭhamaṁ.
