Criticizing and praising leads to heaven or hell.

ฉบับหลวงวัณณสูตร

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ข้อ ๘๓ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๔ ประการ ย่อมเกิดในนรก เหมือนถูกนำมาโยนลง ธรรม ๔ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ บุคคลไม่พิจารณาใคร่ครวญก่อนแล้ว

เล่ม ๒๑ · หน้า ๘๔กล่าวสรรเสริญ บุคคลที่ไม่ควรสรรเสริญ ๑ ไม่พิจารณาใคร่ครวญก่อนแล้ว กล่าวติเตียนบุคคลที่ ควรสรรเสริญ ๑ ไม่พิจารณาใคร่ครวญก่อนแล้ว ปลูกความเลื่อมใสในฐานะที่ไม่ควรเลื่อมใส ๑ ไม่พิจารณาใคร่ครวญก่อนแล้วปลูกความไม่เลื่อมใสในฐานะที่ควรเลื่อมใส ๑ บุคคลผู้ประกอบด้วย ธรรม ๔ ประการนี้แล ย่อมเกิดในนรก เหมือนถูกนำมาโยนลง ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลผู้ประกอบ ด้วยธรรม ๔ ประการ ย่อมเกิดในสวรรค์ เหมือนถูกเชิญมา ธรรม ๔ ประการเป็นไฉน คือ บุคคลพิจารณาใคร่ครวญก่อนแล้วย่อมติเตียนบุคคลที่ควรติเตียน ๑ พิจารณาใคร่ครวญก่อนแล้ว

ย่อมสรรเสริญบุคคลที่ควรสรรเสริญ ๑ พิจารณาใคร่ครวญก่อนแล้ว ปลูกความไม่เลื่อมใสในฐานะ ที่ไม่ควรเลื่อมใส ๑ พิจารณาใคร่ครวญก่อนแล้ว ปลูกความเลื่อมใสในฐานะที่ควรเลื่อมใส ๑ บุคคล ผู้ประกอบด้วยธรรม ๔ ประการนี้แล ย่อมเกิดในสวรรค์เหมือนถูกเชิญมา ฯ

    “Catūhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye.

    “Mendicants, someone with four qualities is placed in hell as if delivered there.

    Katamehi catūhi?

    What four?

  6. 1.3

    Ananuvicca apariyogāhetvā avaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati,

    Without examining or scrutinizing, they praise those deserving of criticism,

    ananuvicca apariyogāhetvā vaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsati,

    and they criticize those deserving of praise.

  8. 1.5

    ananuvicca apariyogāhetvā appasādanīye ṭhāne pasādaṁ upadaṁseti, ananuvicca apariyogāhetvā pasādanīye ṭhāne appasādaṁ upadaṁseti—

    They arouse faith in things that are dubious, and they don’t arouse faith in things that are inspiring.

    imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgato yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye.

    Someone with these four qualities is placed in hell as if delivered there.

    Catūhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge.

    Someone with four qualities is placed in heaven as if delivered there.

    What four?

    Anuvicca pariyogāhetvā avaṇṇārahassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsati,

    After examining and scrutinizing, they criticize those deserving of criticism,

    anuvicca pariyogāhetvā vaṇṇārahassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsati,

    and they praise those deserving of praise.

  14. 2.5

    anuvicca pariyogāhetvā appasādanīye ṭhāne appasādaṁ upadaṁseti

    They don’t arouse faith in things that are dubious,

  15. 2.6

    anuvicca pariyogāhetvā pasādanīye ṭhāne pasādaṁ upadaṁseti—

    and they do arouse faith in things that are inspiring.

  16. 2.7

    imehi kho, bhikkhave, catūhi dhammehi samannāgato yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge”ti.

    Someone with these four qualities is placed in heaven as if delivered there.”
