Ānandasutta
The Buddha explains to Ānanda five ways in which a mendicant can live comfortably with their spiritual companions.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ข้อ ๑๐๖สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ที่โฆสิตารามใกล้เมืองโกสัมพี ครั้งนั้น แล ท่านพระอานนท์เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ถวายบังคมแล้วนั่ง ณ ที่ควรส่วน ข้างหนึ่ง ครั้นแล้วได้ทูลถามว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ภิกษุสงฆ์พึงอยู่เป็นผาสุก เพราะเหตุ เท่าไรหนอแล ฯ
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ดูกรอานนท์ ภิกษุเป็นผู้ถึงพร้อมด้วยศีลด้วยตนเอง ไม่ ติเตียนผู้อื่นในเพราะอธิศีล แม้เพราะเหตุเท่านี้ ภิกษุสงฆ์พึงอยู่เป็นผาสุก ฯ
อ. ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ก็ปริยายแม้อื่นซึ่งเป็นเหตุให้ภิกษุสงฆ์พึงอยู่เป็นผาสุก พึงมีอยู่หรือ
พ. พึงมีอานนท์ แล้วตรัสต่อไปว่า ดูกรอานนท์ ภิกษุเป็นผู้ถึงพร้อมด้วยศีลด้วย ตนเอง ไม่ติเตียนผู้อื่นในเพราะอธิศีล และเป็นผู้ใส่ใจตนเอง ไม่ใส่ใจผู้อื่น แม้เพราะเหตุ เท่านี้ ภิกษุสงฆ์พึงอยู่เป็นผาสุก ฯ
อ. ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ก็ปริยายแม้อื่นซึ่งเป็นเหตุให้ภิกษุสงฆ์พึงอยู่เป็นผาสุก
พึงมีอยู่หรือ
พ. พึงมีอานนท์ แล้วตรัสต่อไปว่า ดูกรอานนท์ ภิกษุเป็นผู้ถึงพร้อมด้วยศีลด้วย ตนเอง ไม่ติเตียนผู้อื่นในเพราะอธิศีล เป็นผู้ใส่ใจตนเอง ไม่ใส่ใจผู้อื่น และเป็นผู้ไม่มีชื่อ เสียง ย่อมไม่สะดุ้งเพราะความไม่มีชื่อเสียงนั้น แม้เพราะเหตุเท่านี้ ภิกษุสงฆ์พึงอยู่เป็นผาสุก ฯ
อ. ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ก็ปริยายแม้อื่นซึ่งเป็นเหตุให้ภิกษุสงฆ์พึงอยู่เป็นผาสุก พึงมีอยู่หรือ
พ. พึงมี อานนท์ แล้วตรัสต่อไปว่า ดูกรอานนท์ ภิกษุเป็นผู้ถึงพร้อมด้วยศีลด้วย ตนเอง ไม่ติเตียนผู้อื่นในเพราะอธิศีล เป็นผู้ใส่ใจตนเอง ไม่ใส่ใจผู้อื่น เป็นผู้ไม่มีชื่อเสียง
เล่ม ๒๒ · หน้า ๑๑๘ย่อมไม่สะดุ้งเพราะความไม่มีชื่อเสียงนั้น และเป็นผู้ได้ตามความปรารถนา ได้โดยไม่ยาก ไม่ ลำบาก ซึ่งฌาน ๔ อันมีในจิตยิ่ง เป็นเครื่องอยู่สบายในปัจจุบัน แม้เพราะเหตุเท่านี้ ภิกษุสงฆ์ พึงอยู่เป็นผาสุก ฯ
อ. ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ ก็ปริยายแม้อื่นซึ่งเป็นเหตุให้ภิกษุสงฆ์พึงอยู่เป็นผาสุก พึงมีอยู่หรือ
พ. พึงมี อานนท์ แล้วตรัสต่อไปว่า ดูกรอานนท์ ภิกษุเป็นผู้ถึงพร้อมด้วยศีลด้วย ตนเอง ไม่ติเตียนผู้อื่นในเพราะอธิศีล ฯลฯ เป็นผู้ได้ตามความปรารถนา ได้โดยไม่ยาก ไม่ ลำบาก ซึ่งฌาน ๔ อันมีในจิตยิ่ง เป็นเครื่องอยู่สบายในปัจจุบัน และย่อมกระทำให้แจ้งซึ่ง เจโตวิมุติ ปัญญาวิมุติ อันหาอาสวะมิได้ เพราะอาสวะทั้งหลายสิ้นไป ด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเอง ในปัจจุบัน เข้าถึงอยู่ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่านี้แล ภิกษุสงฆ์พึงอยู่เป็นผาสุก ดูกรอานนท์ อนึ่งเรา ย่อมกล่าวได้ว่า ธรรมเครื่องอยู่เป็นผาสุกอย่างอื่น ที่ดีกว่าหรือประณีตกว่าธรรมเครื่องอยู่เป็นผาสุก เช่นนี้ ย่อมไม่มี ฯ

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Kosambī in Ghosita’s monastery.
- 1.2
Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,

“Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, bhikkhu saṅghe viharanto phāsuṁ vihareyyā”ti?
“Sir, how could a mendicant live comfortably while staying in a monastic community?”

“Yato kho, ānanda, bhikkhu attanā sīlasampanno hoti, no paraṁ adhisīle sampavattā;
“It’s when a mendicant is accomplished in their own ethical conduct, but they don’t urge others to be ethical.
- 2.3
ettāvatāpi kho, ānanda, bhikkhu saṅghe viharanto phāsuṁ vihareyyā”ti.
That’s how a mendicant could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.”

“Siyā pana, bhante, aññopi pariyāyo yathā bhikkhu saṅghe viharanto phāsuṁ vihareyyā”ti?
“But sir, could there be another way for a mendicant to live comfortably while staying in a monastic community?”

“Siyā, ānanda.
“There could, Ānanda.

Yato kho, ānanda, bhikkhu attanā sīlasampanno hoti, no paraṁ adhisīle sampavattā;
It’s when a mendicant is accomplished in their own ethical conduct, but they don’t urge others to be ethical.

attānupekkhī ca hoti, no parānupekkhī;
And they watch themselves, but don’t watch others.
- 3.5
ettāvatāpi kho, ānanda, bhikkhu saṅghe viharanto phāsuṁ vihareyyā”ti.
That’s how a mendicant could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.”

And they get the four absorptions—blissful meditations in this life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.

ettāvatāpi kho, ānanda, bhikkhu saṅghe viharanto phāsuṁ vihareyyā”ti.
That’s how a mendicant could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.”

āsavānañca khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paññāvimuttiṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati;
And they realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom. And they live having realized it with their own insight in this very life due to the ending of defilements.

ettāvatāpi kho, ānanda, bhikkhu saṅghe viharanto phāsuṁ vihareyya.
That’s how a mendicant could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.
- 7.1
Imamhā cāhaṁ, ānanda, phāsuvihārā añño phāsuvihāro uttaritaro vā paṇītataro vā natthīti vadāmī”ti.
And I say that there is no better or finer way of living comfortably than this.”
