Mahāsudassanacariya
Mahāsudassana’s Conduct
- 1.1
“Kusāvatimhi nagare,
“In the city of Kusāvatī,
- 1.2
yadā āsiṁ mahīpati;
when I was Lord of the Earth,
- 1.3
Mahāsudassano nāma,
my name was Sudassana the Great,
- 1.4
cakkavattī mahabbalo.
a wheel-turning monarch of great power.
- 2.1
Tatthāhaṁ divase tikkhattuṁ,
There, thrice a day,
- 2.2
ghosāpemi tahiṁ tahiṁ;
I declared in one place or another:
- 2.3
‘Ko kiṁ icchati pattheti,
‘Who needs what? Who wants what?
- 2.4
kassa kiṁ dīyatū dhanaṁ.
To whom ought riches be given?
- 3.1
Ko chātako ko tasito,
Who needs an umbrella? Who is thirsty?
- 3.2
ko mālaṁ ko vilepanaṁ;
Who a garland? Who some makeup?
- 3.3
Nānārattāni vatthāni,
What person, being naked,
- 3.4
ko naggo paridahissati.
and will put on colorful clothes?
- 4.1
Ko pathe chattamādeti,
Who will take an umbrella on a highway,
- 4.2
kopāhanā mudū subhā’;
who needs sandals, soft and pretty?’
- 4.3
Iti sāyañca pāto ca,
Thus I had it proclaimed everywhere
- 4.4
ghosāpemi tahiṁ tahiṁ.
morning and night.
- 5.1
Na taṁ dasasu ṭhānesu,
It was not just in ten places,
- 5.2
napi ṭhānasatesu vā;
or even a hundred,
- 5.3
Anekasataṭhānesu,
but in many hundreds of places
- 5.4
paṭiyattaṁ yācake dhanaṁ.
riches were prepared for supplicants.
- 6.1
Divā vā yadi vā rattiṁ,
By day or by night
- 6.2
yadi eti vanibbako;
if a supplicant comes,
- 6.3
Laddhā yadicchakaṁ bhogaṁ,
then having gotten all he wants,
- 6.4
pūrahatthova gacchati.
he leaves with full hands.
- 7.1
Evarūpaṁ mahādānaṁ,
I gave great gifts like this
- 7.2
Adāsiṁ yāvajīvikaṁ;
for my whole life.
- 7.3
Napāhaṁ dessaṁ dhanaṁ dammi,
I did not give because I disliked riches,
- 7.4
Napi natthi nicayo mayi.
or because I had a store set aside.
- 8.1
Yathāpi āturo nāma,
Suppose a person is sick.
- 8.2
rogato parimuttiyā;
In order to be free of sickness
- 8.3
Dhanena vejjaṁ tappetvā,
having compensated the doctor with money,
- 8.4
rogato parimuccati.
they become freed from sickness.
- 9.1
Tathevāhaṁ jānamāno,
Thus I, knowingly,
- 9.2
paripūretumasesato;
in order to fulfill without remainder,
- 9.3
Ūnamanaṁ pūrayituṁ,
to fulfill what is lacking,
- 9.4
demi dānaṁ vanibbake;
gave gifts to supplicants
- 9.5
Nirālayo apaccāso,
without clinging or reward,
- 9.6
sambodhimanupattiyā”ti.
for the attainment of awakening.”
- 10.1
Mahāsudassanacariyaṁ catutthaṁ.
