    Esteem

  5. 1.1

    Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

    This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

  6. 2.1

    “Diṭṭhā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā sakkārena abhibhūtā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā.

    “I’ve seen, mendicants, sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by honor. When their body broke up, after death, they were reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

  7. 3.1

    Diṭṭhā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā asakkārena abhibhūtā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā.

    I’ve seen sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by not being honored. When their body broke up, after death, they were reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

  8. 4.1

    Diṭṭhā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā sakkārena ca asakkārena ca tadubhayena abhibhūtā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā.

    I’ve seen sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by both honor and by not being honored. When their body broke up, after death, they were reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.

  9. 5.1

    Taṁ kho panāhaṁ, bhikkhave, nāññassa samaṇassa vā brāhmaṇassa vā sutvā vadāmi;

    Now, I don’t say this because I’ve heard it from some other ascetic or brahmin.

  10. 5.2

    (…) api ca, bhikkhave, yadeva me sāmaṁ ñātaṁ sāmaṁ diṭṭhaṁ sāmaṁ viditaṁ tamevāhaṁ vadāmi.

    I only say it because I’ve known, seen, and realized it for myself.”

  11. 6.1

    Diṭṭhā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā sakkārena abhibhūtā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā.

  12. 7.1

    Diṭṭhā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā asakkārena abhibhūtā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā.

  13. 8.1

    Diṭṭhā mayā, bhikkhave, sattā sakkārena ca asakkārena ca tadubhayena abhibhūtā, pariyādinnacittā, kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapannā”ti.

  14. 8.2

    Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca.

    The Buddha spoke this matter.

  15. 8.3

    Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

    On this it is said:

  16. 9.1

    “Yassa sakkariyamānassa,

    “Whether they’re honored

  17. 9.2

    asakkārena cūbhayaṁ;

    or not honored, or both,

  18. 9.3

    Samādhi na vikampati,

    their immersion doesn’t waver

  19. 9.4

    appamādavihārino.

    as they abide in the immeasurables.

  20. 10.1

    Taṁ jhāyinaṁ sātatikaṁ,

    They persistently practice absorption

  21. 10.2

    sukhumadiṭṭhivipassakaṁ;

    with subtle view and discernment.

  22. 10.3

    Upādānakkhayārāmaṁ,

    Rejoicing in the ending of grasping,

  23. 10.4

    āhu sappuriso itī”ti.

    they’re said to be a true person.”

  24. 11.1

    Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

    This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

  25. 11.2

    Dutiyaṁ.
