Samuggajātaka

The Box

“Whence come ye, friends”—This story the Master, while dwelling at Jetavana, told of a worldly-minded Brother. The Master, they say, asked him if it were true that he was hankering after the world, and on his confessing that it was so, he said, “Why, Brother, do you desire a woman? Verily woman is wicked and ungrateful. Of old Asura demons swallowed women, and though they guarded them in their belly, they could not keep them faithful to one man. How then will you be able to do so?” And hereupon he related an old-world tale.

    Kaccittha bhonto kusalaṁ anāmayaṁ,

    Cirassamabbhāgamanaṁ hi vo idha”.

    “Ahameva eko idha majja patto,

    Na cāpi me dutiyo koci vijjati;

    Kimeva sandhāya te bhāsitaṁ ise,

    ‘Kuto nu āgacchatha bho tayo janā’”.

    “Tuvañca eko bhariyā ca te piyā,

  14. 3.2

    Samuggapakkhittanikiṇṇamantare;

  15. 3.3

    Sā rakkhitā kucchigatāva te sadā,

  16. 3.4

    Vāyussa puttena sahā tahiṁ ratā”.

    “Saṁviggarūpo isinā viyākato,

    So dānavo tattha samuggamuggili;

    Addakkhi bhariyaṁ suci māladhāriniṁ,

    “Sudiṭṭharūpamuggatapānuvattinā,

    Hīnā narā ye pamadāvasaṁ gatā;

    Yathā have pāṇarivettha rakkhitā,

    Duṭṭhā mayī aññamabhippamodayi.

    Divā ca ratto ca mayā upaṭṭhitā,

  26. 6.2

    Tapassinā jotirivā vane vasaṁ;

    Sā dhammamukkamma adhammamācari,

    Akiriyarūpo pamadāhi santhavo.

    Sarīramajjhamhi ṭhitātimaññahaṁ,

  30. 7.2

    Mayhaṁ ayanti asatiṁ asaññataṁ;

  31. 7.3

    Sā dhammamukkamma adhammamācari,

  32. 7.4

    Akiriyarūpo pamadāhi santhavo.

  33. 8.1

    Surakkhitaṁ meti kathaṁ nu vissase,

  34. 8.2

    Anekacittāsu na hatthi rakkhaṇā;

  35. 8.3

    Etā hi pātālapapātasannibhā,

  36. 8.4

    Etthappamatto byasanaṁ nigaccha”ti.

  37. 9.1

    “Tasmā hi te sukhino vītasokā,

  38. 9.2

    Ye mātugāmehi caranti nissaṭā;

  39. 9.3

    Etaṁ sivaṁ uttamamābhipatthayaṁ,

  40. 9.4

    Na mātugāmehi kareyya santhavanti”.
