Sucaritasutta

Someone of good conduct and appropriate aspiration may be reborn as a centaur.

พระนครสาวัตถี. ครั้งนั้น ภิกษุรูปหนึ่ง เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ฯลฯ ครั้นแล้วได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ อะไรหนอเป็นเหตุ เป็นปัจจัยให้บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ เมื่อตายไปเข้าถึงความเป็นสหายของพวกเทวดาซึ่งนับเนื่องในหมู่คนธรรพ์ พระเจ้าข้า?

พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า ดูกรภิกษุ บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ประพฤติสุจริตด้วยกาย ด้วยวาจา ด้วยใจ เขาได้สดับมาว่า พวกเทวดาซึ่งนับเนื่องในหมู่คนธรรพ์มีอายุยืน มีวรรณะงาม มีความสุขมาก. เขาจึงมีความปรารถนาอย่างนี้ว่า โอหนอ เมื่อตายไปขอเราพึงเข้าถึงความเป็นสหายของพวกเทวดาซึ่งนับเนื่องในหมู่คนธรรพ์. ครั้นตายไป เขาย่อมเข้าถึงความเป็นสหายของพวกเทวดาซึ่งนับเนื่องในหมู่คนธรรพ์. ดูกรภิกษุ ข้อนี้แลเป็นเหตุ เป็นปัจจัย ให้บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ เมื่อตายไปย่อมเข้าถึงความเป็นสหายของพวกเทวดาซึ่งนับเนื่องในหมู่คนธรรพ์.

    Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

    At Sāvatthī.

    Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Seated to one side, that mendicant said to the Buddha:

    “ko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo, yena midhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā gandhabbakāyikānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjatī”ti?

    “Sir, what is the cause, what is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods of the centaur realm?”

    “Idha, bhikkhu, ekacco kāyena sucaritaṁ carati, vācāya sucaritaṁ carati, manasā sucaritaṁ carati.

    “Mendicant, it’s when someone does good things by way of body, speech, and mind.

    Tassa sutaṁ hoti:

    ‘gandhabbakāyikā devā dīghāyukā vaṇṇavanto sukhabahulā’ti.

    ‘The gods of the centaur realm are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.’

    ‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā gandhabbakāyikānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti.

    ‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the gods of the centaur realm!’

    So kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā gandhabbakāyikānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjati.

    When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in the company of the gods of the centaur realm.

    Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhu, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo, yena midhekacco kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā gandhabbakāyikānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjatī”ti.

    This is the cause, this is the reason why someone, when their body breaks up, after death, is reborn in the company of the gods of the centaur realm.”
