Chaphassāyatanasutta

While the mendicants are listening to the teachings, Māra makes an awful roar to distract them.

ฉบับหลวงอายตนสูตรที่ ๗

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ครั้งหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ กูฏาคารศาลา ป่ามหาวัน เขตเมืองเวสาลี ฯ

ก็โดยสมัยนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงยังภิกษุทั้งหลายให้เห็นแจ้ง ให้สมาทาน ให้อาจหาญ ให้ร่าเริง ด้วยธรรมีกถาเกี่ยวด้วยผัสสายตนะ ๖ ฯ

ก็ภิกษุเหล่านั้นทำในใจให้สำเร็จประโยชน์ น้อมนึกมาด้วยความเต็มใจ เงี่ยโสตลงสดับธรรมอยู่ ฯ

เล่ม ๑๕ · หน้า ๑๔๑ครั้งนั้นแล มารผู้มีบาปได้มีความคิดว่า พระสมณโคดมนี้แล ยังภิกษุทั้งหลายให้เห็นแจ้ง ให้สมาทาน ให้อาจหาญ ให้ร่าเริงด้วยธรรมีกถาเกี่ยวด้วยผัสสายตนะ ๖ และภิกษุเหล่านั้นทำในใจให้สำเร็จประโยชน์ น้อมนึกมาด้วยความเต็มใจ เงี่ยโสตลงสดับธรรมอยู่ ถ้ากระไร เราพึงเข้าไปเฝ้าพระสมณโคดมถึงที่ประทับ เพื่อการกำบังตาเถิด ฯ

ข้อ ๔๖๕ครั้งนั้นแล มารผู้มีบาปเข้าไปใกล้พระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ครั้นแล้ว ได้ร้องเสียงดังพิลึกพึงกลัว ประดุจแผ่นดินจะถล่มในที่ใกล้พระผู้มีพระภาค ฯ

ลำดับนั้น ภิกษุรูปหนึ่งจึงกล่าวกะภิกษุอีกรูปหนึ่งอย่างนี้ว่า ภิกษุ ภิกษุ แผ่นดินนี้เห็นจะถล่มเสียละกระมัง ฯ

เมื่อภิกษุนั้นกล่าวอย่างนี้แล้ว พระผู้มีพระภาคจึงตรัสกะภิกษุนั้นว่า ดูกรภิกษุ แผ่นดินนี้ย่อมไม่ถล่ม ดูกรภิกษุ นั่นมารผู้มีบาปมาแล้ว เพื่อกำบังตาพวกเธอ ฯ

ข้อ ๔๖๖ลำดับนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงทราบว่า นี้เป็นมารผู้มีบาป จึงตรัสกะมารผู้มีบาปด้วยพระคาถาว่า รูป เสียง กลิ่น รส โผฏฐัพพะ และธรรมารมณ์ทั้งสิ้นนี้ เป็นโลกามิสอันแรงกล้า โลกหมกมุ่นอยู่ในอารมณ์เหล่านี้ ส่วนสาวกของพระพุทธเจ้ามีสติก้าวล่วงโลกามิสนั้น และก้าวล่วงบ่วงมารแล้ว รุ่งเรืองอยู่ดุจพระอาทิตย์ ฉะนั้น ฯ

ลำดับนั้น มารผู้มีบาปเป็นทุกข์เสียใจว่า พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงรู้จักเรา พระสุคตทรงรู้จักเรา ดังนี้ จึงได้หายไปในที่นั้นนั่นเอง ฯ

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

  5. 1.2

    Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ upādāya bhikkhūnaṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti.

    Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk on the topic of the six fields of contact.

    Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.

    And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening.

    Atha kho mārassa pāpimato etadahosi:

    Then Māra thought,

    “ayaṁ kho samaṇo gotamo channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ upādāya bhikkhūnaṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sappahaṁseti.

    “This ascetic Gotama is educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk on the topic of the six fields of contact.

    Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.

    Yannūnāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkameyyaṁ vicakkhukammāyā”ti.

    Why don’t I go and pull the wool over their eyes?”

    Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato avidūre mahantaṁ bhayabheravaṁ saddamakāsi, apissudaṁ pathavī maññe undrīyati. Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu aññataraṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:

    Then Māra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and made a terrifyingly loud noise close by him. It seemed as if the earth were shattering, so that one of the mendicants said to another,

    “bhikkhu bhikkhu, esā pathavī maññe undrīyatī”ti.

    “Mendicant, mendicant, it seems like the earth is shattering!”

    Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā taṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:

    When this was said, the Buddha said to that mendicant,

    “nesā, bhikkhu, pathavī undrīyati.

    “Mendicant, that’s not the earth shattering.

  15. 2.9

    Māro eso pāpimā tumhākaṁ vicakkhukammāya āgato”ti.

    That’s Māra the Wicked come to pull the wool over your eyes!”

    Atha kho bhagavā “māro ayaṁ pāpimā” iti viditvā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    Then the Buddha, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, addressed him in verse:

    “Rūpā saddā rasā gandhā,

    “Sights, sounds, tastes, smells,

    phassā dhammā ca kevalā;

    touches, and ideas, the lot of them—

    Etaṁ lokāmisaṁ ghoraṁ,

    this is the terrible bait

  20. 3.4

    ettha loko vimucchito.

    that the world’s infatuated by.

  21. 4.1

    Etañca samatikkamma,

    But a mindful disciple of the Buddha

    sato buddhassa sāvako;

    has transcended all that.

    Māradheyyaṁ atikkamma,

    Having slipped free of Māra’s dominion,

    ādiccova virocatī”ti.

    they dazzle like the sun.”

  25. 5.1

    Atha kho māro pāpimā …pe… tatthevantaradhāyīti.

    Then Māra … vanished right there.
