Paṭhamasamaṇabrāhmaṇasutta

A true ascetic understands the six faculties in terms of gratification, drawback, and escape.

ฉบับหลวงสมณพราหมณสูตรที่ ๑ · ว่าด้วยอินทรีย์ ๖

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

ข้อ ๙๐๙ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย อินทรีย์ ๖ ประการนี้ ๖ ประการเป็นไฉน? คือ จักขุนทรีย์ … มนินทรีย์.

ข้อ ๙๑๐ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็สมณะหรือพราหมณ์เหล่าใดเหล่าหนึ่งไม่รู้ชัดซึ่งความเกิด ความดับ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งอินทรีย์ ๖ ประการนี้ ตามความเป็นจริง สมณะหรือพราหมณ์เหล่านั้น เราไม่นับว่าเป็นสมณะในหมู่สมณะ หรือว่าเป็นพราหมณ์ในหมู่พราหมณ์ เพราะท่านเหล่านั้นไม่กระทำให้แจ้งซึ่งประโยชน์ของความเป็นสมณะหรือของความเป็นพราหมณ์ ด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเอง ในปัจจุบัน เข้าถึงอยู่.

ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ส่วนสมณะหรือพราหมณ์เหล่าใดเหล่าหนึ่ง รู้ชัดซึ่งความเกิด ความดับ คุณ โทษ และอุบายเครื่องสลัดออกแห่งอินทรีย์ ๖ ประการนี้ ตามความเป็นจริง สมณะหรือพราหมณ์เหล่านั้น เรานับว่าเป็นสมณะในหมู่สมณะ และว่าเป็นพราหมณ์ในหมู่พราหมณ์ เพราะท่านเหล่านั้นกระทำให้แจ้งซึ่งประโยชน์ของความเป็นสมณะและของความเป็นพราหมณ์ ด้วยปัญญาอันยิ่งเองในปัจจุบัน เข้าถึงอยู่.

    “Chayimāni, bhikkhave, indriyāni.

    “Mendicants, there are these six faculties.

    Katamāni cha?

    What six?

  6. 1.3

    Cakkhundriyaṁ, sotindriyaṁ, ghānindriyaṁ, jivhindriyaṁ, kāyindriyaṁ, manindriyaṁ.

    The faculties of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind.

    Ye hi keci, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā imesaṁ channaṁ indriyānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ nappajānanti,

    There are ascetics and brahmins who don’t truly understand the origin, disappearance, gratification, drawback, and escape when it comes to these six faculties.

    na me te, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā samaṇesu vā samaṇasammatā brāhmaṇesu vā brāhmaṇasammatā, na ca panete āyasmanto sāmaññatthaṁ vā brahmaññatthaṁ vā diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharanti.

    I don’t deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables don’t realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and don’t live having realized it with their own insight in this very life.

    Ye ca kho keci, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā imesaṁ channaṁ indriyānaṁ samudayañca atthaṅgamañca assādañca ādīnavañca nissaraṇañca yathābhūtaṁ pajānanti,

    There are ascetics and brahmins who do truly understand the origin, disappearance, gratification, drawback, and escape when it comes to these six faculties.

    te kho me, bhikkhave, samaṇā vā brāhmaṇā vā samaṇesu ceva samaṇasammatā brāhmaṇesu ca brāhmaṇasammatā, te ca panāyasmanto sāmaññatthañca brahmaññatthañca diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharantī”ti.

    I deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and live having realized it with their own insight.”
