Brahmalokasutta
The brahmās Subrahmā and Suddhāvāsa note that a fellow-brahmā is living in negligence, overly impressed with his own glory, so they go to shake him from his complacence.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ข้อ ๕๘๖สาวัตถีนิทาน ฯ
ก็สมัยนั้นแล พระผู้มีพระภาคเป็นผู้ประทับพักกลางวัน หลีกเร้นอยู่ ฯ
ครั้งนั้นแล สุพรหมปัจเจกพรหม และสุทธาวาสปัจเจกพรหมเข้าไป ใกล้ที่ประทับของ พระผู้มีพระภาค ครั้นแล้วได้ยืนพิงบานประตูคนละข้าง ฯ
ลำดับนั้นแล สุพรหมปัจเจกพรหมได้กล่าวกะสุทธาวาสปัจเจกพรหมว่า แน่ะท่านผู้นิรทุกข์ ไม่ใช่กาลอันควรที่จะเข้าเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคก่อน พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงประทับพักกลางวันหลีกเร้นอยู่ ก็พรหมโลกโน้นบริบูรณ์และเบิกบานแล้ว แต่พรหมในพรหมโลกนั้นย่อมอยู่ด้วยความประมาท แน่ะท่านผู้นิรทุกข์ มาไปด้วยกัน เราทั้งหลายจักเข้าไปยังพรหมโลกนั้น ครั้นแล้วพึงยังพรหมนั้นให้สลดใจ
สุทธาวาสปัจเจกพรหมได้รับคำของสุพรหมปัจเจกพรหมแล้ว ฯ
ครั้งนั้นแล สุพรหมปัจเจกพรหมและสุทธาวาสปัจเจกพรหมได้หายไปจากเบื้องพระพักตร์ของพระผู้มีพระภาค ปรากฏแล้วในพรหมโลกนั้น ปานดังบุรุษมีกำลัง ฯลฯ ฉะนั้น ฯ
เล่ม ๑๕ · หน้า ๑๘๐พรหมนั้นได้เห็นแล้วแลซึ่งพรหมทั้งหลายเหล่านั้น ผู้มาอยู่แต่ที่ไกลเทียว ครั้นแล้ว ได้กล่าวคำนี้กะพรหมเหล่านั้นว่า แน่ะท่านผู้นิรทุกข์ทั้งหลาย เชิญเถิด พวกท่านมากันแต่ที่ไหนหนอ ฯ
พรหมเหล่านั้นกล่าวว่า แน่ะท่านผู้นิรทุกข์ พวกเรามาแต่สำนักของพระผู้มีพระภาคผู้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าพระองค์นั้น แน่ะท่านผู้นิรทุกข์ ก็ท่านจะไปสู่ที่บำรุงของพระผู้มีพระภาคพระองค์นั้น ผู้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าบ้างหรือ ฯ
ข้อ ๕๘๗เมื่อพรหมเหล่านั้นกล่าวแล้วเช่นนี้แล พรหมนั้นอดกลั้นคำนั้นไม่ได้ จึงนิรมิตตนเป็นพันตน แล้วได้กล่าวคำนี้กะสุพรหมปัจเจกพรหมว่า ฯ
“แน่ะท่านผู้นิรทุกข์ ท่านเห็นอิทธานุภาพเห็นปานดังนี้ของเราหรือไม่” ฯ
สุพรหมปัจเจกพรหมกล่าวว่า “แน่ะท่านผู้นิรทุกข์ เราเห็นอยู่แลซึ่งอิทธานุภาพเห็นปานดั่งนี้ของท่าน” ฯ
พรหมนั้นกล่าวว่า “แน่ะท่านผู้นิรทุกข์ เรานั้นแลเป็นผู้มีฤทธิ์มากอย่างนี้ มีอานุภาพมากอย่างนี้ จักไปสู่ที่บำรุงของสมณะหรือพราหมณ์อื่นทำไม” ฯ
ข้อ ๕๘๘ลำดับนั้นแล สุพรหมปัจเจกพรหมนิรมิตตนเป็นสองพันตน แล้วได้กล่าวคำนี้ กะพรหมว่า
“แน่ะท่านผู้นิรทุกข์ ท่านเห็นอิทธานุภาพ เห็นปานดังนี้ของเราหรือไม่” ฯ
พรหมนั้นกล่าวว่า “แน่ะท่านผู้นิรทุกข์ เราเห็นอยู่แลซึ่งอิทธานุภาพ เห็นปานดั่งนี้ของท่าน ฯ
สุพรหมปัจเจกพรหมกล่าวว่า “แน่ะท่านผู้นิรทุกข์ พระผู้มีพระภาคพระองค์นั้นเท่านั้น เป็นผู้มีฤทธิ์มากกว่า และมีอานุภาพใหญ่กว่าท่านและเราด้วย ฯ
“แน่ะท่านผู้นิรทุกข์ ท่านพึงไปสู่ที่บำรุงของพระผู้มีพระภาคพระองค์นั้น ผู้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า” ฯ
ข้อ ๕๘๙ครั้งนั้นแล พรหมนั้นได้กล่าวกะสุพรหมปัจเจกพรหมด้วยคาถาว่า “แน่ะพรหม ครุธ ๓๐๐ หงส์ ๔๐๐ เหยี่ยวตะไกร ๕๐๐ และวิมานของเราผู้มีฌานนี้นั้นย่อมรุ่งโรจน์ส่องสว่างอยู่ในทิศอุดร” ฯ
ข้อ ๕๙๐สุพรหมปัจเจกพรหมกล่าวว่า
เล่ม ๑๕ · หน้า ๑๘๑“วิมานของท่านนั้นถึงจะรุ่งโรจน์ส่องสว่างอยู่ในทิศอุดรก็จริง ถึงเช่นนั้นเพราะเห็นโทษในรูป เพราะเห็นรูปอันหวั่นไหวด้วยความหนาวเป็นต้นอยู่ เป็นนิจ ฉะนั้นพระศาสดาผู้มีเมธาดีจึงไม่ยินดีในรูป"
ข้อ ๕๙๑ครั้งนั้นแล สุพรหมปัจเจกพรหมและสุทธาวาสปัจเจกพรหมยังพรหมนั้นให้สลดใจแล้วหายไปในที่นั้นเอง ฯ
ก็พรหมนั้น โดยสมัยต่อมาได้ไปสู่ที่บำรุงของพระผู้มีพระภาคผู้เป็นพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าแล้วแล ฯ

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
At Sāvatthī.
- 1.2
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā divāvihāragato hoti paṭisallīno.
Now at that time the Buddha had gone into retreat for the day’s meditation.
- 1.3
Atha kho subrahmā ca paccekabrahmā suddhāvāso ca paccekabrahmā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā paccekaṁ dvārabāhaṁ upanissāya aṭṭhaṁsu. Atha kho subrahmā paccekabrahmā suddhāvāsaṁ paccekabrahmānaṁ etadavoca:
Then the independent divinities Subrahmā and Suddhāvāsa went to the Buddha and stationed themselves one by each door-post. But Subrahmā said to Suddhāvāsa,

“akālo kho tāva, mārisa, bhagavantaṁ payirupāsituṁ;
“Good fellow, it’s the wrong time to pay homage to the Buddha.

divāvihāragato bhagavā paṭisallīno ca.
He has gone into retreat for the day’s meditation.

Asuko ca brahmaloko iddho ceva phīto ca, brahmā ca tatra pamādavihāraṁ viharati.
But such-and-such realm of divinity is successful and prosperous, while the divinity living there is negligent.

Āyāma, mārisa, yena so brahmaloko tenupasaṅkamissāma; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ brahmānaṁ saṁvejeyyāmā”ti.
Come, let’s go to that realm of divinity and inspire awe in that divinity!”

“Evaṁ, mārisā”ti kho suddhāvāso paccekabrahmā subrahmuno paccekabrahmuno paccassosi.
“Yes, good fellow,” replied Suddhāvāsa.

Atha kho subrahmā ca paccekabrahmā suddhāvāso ca paccekabrahmā—seyyathāpi nāma balavā puriso …pe… evameva—bhagavato purato antarahitā tasmiṁ brahmaloke pāturahesuṁ.
Then, as easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, they vanished from in front of the Buddha and appeared in that realm of divinity.

Addasā kho so brahmā te brahmāno dūratova āgacchante. Disvāna te brahmāno etadavoca:
That divinity saw those divinities coming off in the distance and said to them,

“handa kuto nu tumhe, mārisā, āgacchathā”ti?
“Well now, good fellows, where have you come from?”
- 2.4
“Āgatā kho mayaṁ, mārisa, amha tassa bhagavato santikā arahato sammāsambuddhassa.
“Good fellow, we’ve come from the presence of the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha.

Gaccheyyāsi pana tvaṁ, mārisa, tassa bhagavato upaṭṭhānaṁ arahato sammāsambuddhassā”ti?
Shouldn’t you go to attend on that Blessed One?”

Evaṁ vutto, kho so brahmā taṁ vacanaṁ anadhivāsento sahassakkhattuṁ attānaṁ abhinimminitvā subrahmānaṁ paccekabrahmānaṁ etadavoca:
When they had spoken, that divinity refused to accept their advice. He multiplied himself a thousand times and said to Subrahmā,

“passasi me no tvaṁ, mārisa, evarūpaṁ iddhānubhāvan”ti?
“Good fellow, can’t you see that I have such psychic power?”
- 3.3
“Passāmi kho tyāhaṁ, mārisa, evarūpaṁ iddhānubhāvan”ti.
“I see that, good fellow.”
- 3.4
“So khvāhaṁ, mārisa, evaṁmahiddhiko evaṁmahānubhāvo kassa aññassa samaṇassa vā brāhmaṇassa vā upaṭṭhānaṁ gamissāmī”ti?
“Since I have such psychic power and might, what other ascetic or brahmin should I go to and attend upon?”

Atha kho subrahmā paccekabrahmā dvisahassakkhattuṁ attānaṁ abhinimminitvā taṁ brahmānaṁ etadavoca:
Then Subrahmā multiplied himself two thousand times and said to that divinity,

“passasi me no tvaṁ, mārisa, evarūpaṁ iddhānubhāvan”ti?
“Good fellow, can’t you see that I have such psychic power?”
- 4.3
“Passāmi kho tyāhaṁ, mārisa, evarūpaṁ iddhānubhāvan”ti.
“I see that, good fellow.”

“Tayā ca kho, mārisa, mayā ca sveva bhagavā mahiddhikataro ceva mahānubhāvataro ca.
“That Buddha has even more psychic power and might than you or me.
- 4.5
Gaccheyyāsi tvaṁ, mārisa, tassa bhagavato upaṭṭhānaṁ arahato sammāsambuddhassā”ti?
Shouldn’t you go to attend on that Blessed One?”
- 4.6
Atha kho so brahmā subrahmānaṁ paccekabrahmānaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then that divinity addressed Subrahmā in verse:
- 5.1
“Tayo supaṇṇā caturo ca haṁsā,
“There are three hundreds of phoenixes,
four of swans, - 5.2
Byagghīnisā pañcasatā ca jhāyino;
and five of tigerhawks.
To he who practiced absorption - 5.3
Tayidaṁ vimānaṁ jalate ca brahme,
belongs this palace; it shines, Divinity,

Obhāsayaṁ uttarassaṁ disāyan”ti.
lighting up the northern quarter!”
- 6.1
“Kiñcāpi te taṁ jalate vimānaṁ,
“So what if your palace shines,
- 6.2
Obhāsayaṁ uttarassaṁ disāyaṁ;
lighting up the northern quarter?
- 6.3
Rūpe raṇaṁ disvā sadā pavedhitaṁ,
A clever person, seeing the strife in form,
- 6.4
Tasmā na rūpe ramatī sumedho”ti.
its chronic trembling, takes no pleasure in it.”

Atha kho subrahmā ca paccekabrahmā suddhāvāso ca paccekabrahmā taṁ brahmānaṁ saṁvejetvā tatthevantaradhāyiṁsu.
Then after inspiring awe in that divinity, the independent divinities Subrahmā and Suddhāvāsa vanished right there.

Agamāsi ca kho so brahmā aparena samayena bhagavato upaṭṭhānaṁ arahato sammāsambuddhassāti.
And after some time that divinity went to attend on the Buddha.
