Aññāsikoṇḍaññattheragāthā
Koṇḍañña Who Understood
- 1.1
“Esa bhiyyo pasīdāmi,
“My confidence grew
- 1.2
sutvā dhammaṁ mahārasaṁ;
as I heard the teaching, so full of flavor.
- 1.3
Virāgo desito dhammo,
Dispassion is what was taught,
- 1.4
anupādāya sabbaso”.
without any grasping at all.”
- 2.1
“Bahūni loke citrāni,
“There are so many pretty things
- 2.2
asmiṁ pathavimaṇḍale;
in this vast territory.
- 2.3
Mathenti maññe saṅkappaṁ,
They disturb one’s thoughts, it seems to me,
- 2.4
subhaṁ rāgūpasaṁhitaṁ.
attractive, provoking lust.
- 3.1
Rajamuhatañca vātena,
Just as a rain cloud would settle
- 3.2
yathā meghopasammaye;
the dust blown up by the wind,
- 3.3
Evaṁ sammanti saṅkappā,
so thoughts settle down
- 3.4
yadā paññāya passati.
when seen with wisdom.
- 4.1
Sabbe saṅkhārā aniccāti,
All conditions are impermanent—
- 4.2
yadā paññāya passati;
when this is seen with wisdom
- 4.3
Atha nibbindati dukkhe,
one grows disillusioned with suffering:
- 4.4
esa maggo visuddhiyā.
this is the path to purity.
- 5.1
Sabbe saṅkhārā dukkhāti,
All conditions are suffering—
- 5.2
yadā paññāya passati;
when this is seen with wisdom
- 5.3
Atha nibbindati dukkhe,
one grows disillusioned with suffering:
- 5.4
esa maggo visuddhiyā.
this is the path to purity.
- 6.1
Sabbe dhammā anattāti,
All things are not-self—
- 6.2
yadā paññāya passati;
when this is seen with wisdom
- 6.3
Atha nibbindati dukkhe,
one grows disillusioned with suffering:
- 6.4
esa maggo visuddhiyā.
this is the path to purity.”
- 7.1
Buddhānubuddho yo thero,
“The senior monk awakened after the Buddha,
- 7.2
koṇḍañño tibbanikkamo;
Koṇḍañña, is keenly energetic.
- 7.3
Pahīnajātimaraṇo,
He has given up birth and death,
- 7.4
brahmacariyassa kevalī.
and has completed the spiritual journey.”
- 8.1
Oghapāso daḷhakhilo,
“There are floods, snares, and strong posts,
- 8.2
Pabbato duppadālayo;
and a mountain hard to crack;
- 8.3
Chetvā khilañca pāsañca,
snapping the posts and snares,
- 8.4
Selaṁ bhetvāna dubbhidaṁ;
breaking the mountain so hard to break,
- 8.5
Tiṇṇo pāraṅgato jhāyī,
crossing over to the far shore,
- 8.6
Mutto so mārabandhanā.
a meditator is freed from Māra’s bonds.
- 9.1
Uddhato capalo bhikkhu,
When a mendicant is haughty and fickle,
- 9.2
mitte āgamma pāpake;
relying on bad friends,
- 9.3
Saṁsīdati mahoghasmiṁ,
they sink down in the great flood,
- 9.4
ūmiyā paṭikujjito.
overcome by a wave.
- 10.1
Anuddhato acapalo,
But one not restless or fickle,
- 10.2
nipako saṁvutindriyo;
alert, with senses restrained,
- 10.3
Kalyāṇamitto medhāvī,
intelligent, with good friends,
- 10.4
dukkhassantakaro siyā.
makes an end of suffering.
- 11.1
Kālapabbaṅgasaṅkāso,
With knobbly knees,
- 11.2
kiso dhamanisanthato;
thin and veiny,
- 11.3
Mattaññū annapānasmiṁ,
eating and drinking in moderation—
- 11.4
adīnamanaso naro.
this person’s spirit is undaunted.
- 12.1
Phuṭṭho ḍaṁsehi makasehi,
Pestered by flies and mosquitoes
- 12.2
araññasmiṁ brahāvane;
in the wilds, the formidable forest,
- 12.3
Nāgo saṅgāmasīseva,
one should mindfully endure,
- 12.4
sato tatrādhivāsaye.
like an elephant at the head of the battle.
- 13.1
Nābhinandāmi maraṇaṁ,
I don’t long for death;
- 13.2
… pe
I don’t long for life;
- 13.3
…
I await my time,
- 13.4
nibbisaṁ bhatako yathā.
like a worker waiting for their wages.
- 14.1
Nābhinandāmi maraṇaṁ,
I don’t long for death;
- 14.2
… pe
I don’t long for life;
- 14.3
…
I await my time,
- 14.4
sampajāno patissato.
aware and mindful.
- 15.1
Pariciṇṇo mayā satthā,
I’ve served the Teacher
- 15.2
… pe
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
- 15.3
…
The heavy burden is laid down,
- 15.4
bhavanetti samūhatā.
the leash to existence is eradicated.
- 16.1
Yassa catthāya pabbajito,
I’ve attained the goal
- 16.2
agārasmānagāriyaṁ;
for the sake of which I went forth
- 16.3
So me attho anuppatto,
from the lay life to homelessness—
- 16.4
kiṁ me saddhivihārinā”ti.
what use do I have for protégés?”
- 16.5
… Aññāsikoṇḍañño thero ….
