Sāriputtattheragāthā
Sāriputta
- 1.1
“Yathācārī yathāsato satīmā,
“One who’s mindful
as per their conduct and mindfulness, - 1.2
Yatasaṅkappajjhāyi appamatto;
diligent
as per their intentions and meditation, - 1.3
Ajjhattarato samāhitatto,
happy inside, serene, solitary, contented:
- 1.4
Eko santusito tamāhu bhikkhuṁ.
that is what they call a mendicant.
- 2.1
Allaṁ sukkhaṁ vā bhuñjanto,
When eating fresh or dried food,
- 2.2
Na bāḷhaṁ suhito siyā;
one shouldn’t be overly replete.
- 2.3
Ūnūdaro mitāhāro,
A mendicant should wander mindfully,
- 2.4
Sato bhikkhu paribbaje.
with empty stomach, taking limited food.
- 3.1
Cattāro pañca ālope,
Four or five mouthfuls before you’re full,
- 3.2
abhutvā udakaṁ pive;
drink some water;
- 3.3
Alaṁ phāsuvihārāya,
this is enough for a resolute mendicant
- 3.4
pahitattassa bhikkhuno.
to live in comfort.
- 4.1
Kappiyaṁ tañce chādeti,
If they cover themselves with a robe
- 4.2
cīvaraṁ idamatthikaṁ;
that’s allowable and fit for purpose;
- 4.3
Alaṁ phāsuvihārāya,
this is enough for a resolute mendicant
- 4.4
pahitattassa bhikkhuno.
to live in comfort.
- 5.1
Pallaṅkena nisinnassa,
When sitting cross-legged,
- 5.2
jaṇṇuke nābhivassati;
the rain doesn’t fall on the knees;
- 5.3
Alaṁ phāsuvihārāya,
this is enough for a resolute mendicant
- 5.4
pahitattassa bhikkhuno.
to live in comfort.”
- 6.1
Yo sukhaṁ dukkhato adda,
“When you’ve seen happiness as suffering,
- 6.2
dukkhamaddakkhi sallato;
and suffering as a dart,
- 6.3
Ubhayantarena nāhosi,
and that there’s nothing between the two—
- 6.4
kena lokasmi kiṁ siyā.
what keeps you in the world?
What would you become? - 7.1
Mā me kadāci pāpiccho,
Thinking, ‘May I have nothing to do
with those of bad wishes, - 7.2
kusīto hīnavīriyo;
lazy, lacking energy,
- 7.3
Appassuto anādaro,
unlearned, lacking regard for others’—
- 7.4
kena lokasmi kiṁ siyā.
what keeps you in the world?
What would you become?” - 8.1
Bahussuto ca medhāvī,
“An intelligent, learned person,
- 8.2
sīlesu susamāhito;
steady in ethics,
- 8.3
Cetosamathamanuyutto,
devoted to serenity of heart—
- 8.4
api muddhani tiṭṭhatu.
let them stand at the head.”
- 9.1
Yo papañcamanuyutto,
“A beast who likes to proliferate,
- 9.2
papañcābhirato mago;
enjoying proliferation,
- 9.3
Virādhayī so nibbānaṁ,
fails to win extinguishment,
- 9.4
yogakkhemaṁ anuttaraṁ.
the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.
- 10.1
Yo ca papañcaṁ hitvāna,
But one who gives up proliferation,
- 10.2
nippapañcapathe rato;
enjoying the state of non-proliferation,
- 10.3
Ārādhayī so nibbānaṁ,
wins extinguishment,
- 10.4
yogakkhemaṁ anuttaraṁ.
the supreme sanctuary from the yoke.”
- 11.1
Gāme vā yadi vāraññe,
“Whether in the village or the wilderness,
- 11.2
Ninne vā yadi vā thale;
in a valley or the uplands,
- 11.3
Yattha arahanto viharanti,
wherever the perfected ones live
- 11.4
Taṁ bhūmirāmaṇeyyakaṁ.
is a delightful place.”
- 12.1
Ramaṇīyāni araññāni,
“Delightful are the wildernesses
- 12.2
yattha na ramatī jano;
where no people delight.
- 12.3
Vītarāgā ramissanti,
Those free of greed will delight there,
- 12.4
na te kāmagavesino.
not those who seek sensual pleasures.”
- 13.1
Nidhīnaṁva pavattāraṁ,
“Regard one who sees your faults
- 13.2
yaṁ passe vajjadassinaṁ;
as a guide to a hidden treasure.
- 13.3
Niggayhavādiṁ medhāviṁ,
Stay close to one so intelligent and astute
- 13.4
tādisaṁ paṇḍitaṁ bhaje;
who curbs you when you need it.
- 13.5
Tādisaṁ bhajamānassa,
Sticking close to such an impartial person,
- 13.6
seyyo hoti na pāpiyo.
things get better, not worse.”
- 14.1
Ovadeyyānusāseyya,
“Advise and instruct;
- 14.2
asabbhā ca nivāraye;
curb wickedness:
- 14.3
Satañhi so piyo hoti,
for you shall be loved by the good,
- 14.4
asataṁ hoti appiyo.
and disliked by the bad.”
- 15.1
Aññassa bhagavā buddho,
“The Blessed One, the Buddha, the seer
- 15.2
dhammaṁ desesi cakkhumā;
was teaching Dhamma to another.
- 15.3
Dhamme desiyamānamhi,
As he taught the Dhamma,
- 15.4
sotamodhesimatthiko.
I lent an ear to get the meaning.
- 16.1
Taṁ me amoghaṁ savanaṁ,
My listening wasn’t wasted:
- 16.2
vimuttomhi anāsavo.
I’m freed, without defilements.”
- 17.1
Neva pubbenivāsāya,
“Not for knowledge of past lives,
- 17.2
napi dibbassa cakkhuno;
nor even for clairvoyance;
- 17.3
Cetopariyāya iddhiyā,
not for psychic powers,
or encompassing the minds of others, - 17.4
cutiyā upapattiyā;
nor for knowing people’s
passing away and being reborn; - 17.5
Sotadhātuvisuddhiyā,
not for purifying the power of clairaudience,
- 17.6
paṇidhī me na vijjati”.
did I have any wish.”
- 18.1
“Rukkhamūlaṁva nissāya,
“His only shelter is the foot of a tree;
- 18.2
muṇḍo saṅghāṭipāruto;
shaven, wrapped in his outer robe,
- 18.3
Paññāya uttamo thero,
the senior monk foremost in wisdom,
- 18.4
upatissova jhāyati.
Upatissa himself practices absorption.
- 19.1
Avitakkaṁ samāpanno,
When in a meditation free of placing the mind,
- 19.2
sammāsambuddhasāvako;
a disciple of the Buddha
- 19.3
Ariyena tuṇhībhāvena,
is at that moment blessed
- 19.4
upeto hoti tāvade.
with noble silence.
- 20.1
Yathāpi pabbato selo,
As a rocky mountain
- 20.2
acalo suppatiṭṭhito;
is unwavering and well grounded,
- 20.3
Evaṁ mohakkhayā bhikkhu,
so when delusion ends,
- 20.4
pabbatova na vedhati”.
a monk, like a mountain, doesn’t tremble.”
- 21.1
“Anaṅgaṇassa posassa,
“To the man who has not a blemish,
- 21.2
niccaṁ sucigavesino;
who is always seeking purity,
- 21.3
Vālaggamattaṁ pāpassa,
even a hair-tip of evil
- 21.4
abbhamattaṁva khāyati.
seems as big as a stormcloud.”
- 22.1
Nābhinandāmi maraṇaṁ,
“I don’t long for death;
- 22.2
nābhinandāmi jīvitaṁ;
I don’t long for life;
- 22.3
Nikkhipissaṁ imaṁ kāyaṁ,
I will lay down this body,
- 22.4
sampajāno patissato.
aware and mindful.
- 23.1
Nābhinandāmi maraṇaṁ,
I don’t long for death;
- 23.2
nābhinandāmi jīvitaṁ;
I don’t long for life;
- 23.3
Kālañca paṭikaṅkhāmi,
I await my time,
- 23.4
nibbisaṁ bhatako yathā”.
like a worker waiting for their wages.”
- 24.1
“Ubhayena midaṁ maraṇameva,
“Both what came before and what follows after
- 24.2
Nāmaraṇaṁ pacchā vā pure vā;
are nothing but death, not freedom from death.
- 24.3
Paṭipajjatha mā vinassatha,
Practice, don’t perish—
- 24.4
Khaṇo vo mā upaccagā.
don’t let the moment pass you by.
- 25.1
Nagaraṁ yathā paccantaṁ,
Just like a frontier city,
- 25.2
guttaṁ santarabāhiraṁ;
is guarded inside and out,
- 25.3
Evaṁ gopetha attānaṁ,
so you should ward yourselves—
- 25.4
khaṇo vo mā upaccagā;
don’t let the moment pass you by.
- 25.5
Khaṇātītā hi socanti,
For if you miss your moment
- 25.6
nirayamhi samappitā”.
you’ll grieve when sent to hell.”
- 26.1
“Upasanto uparato,
“Calm and still,
- 26.2
mantabhāṇī anuddhato;
thoughtful in counsel, not restless—
- 26.3
Dhunāti pāpake dhamme,
he shakes off bad qualities
- 26.4
dumapattaṁva māluto.
as the gale shakes leaves off a tree.
- 27.1
Upasanto uparato,
Calm and still,
- 27.2
mantabhāṇī anuddhato;
thoughtful in counsel, not restless—
- 27.3
Appāsi pāpake dhamme,
he plucks off bad qualities
- 27.4
dumapattaṁva māluto.
as the gale shakes leaves off a tree.
- 28.1
Upasanto anāyāso,
Calm and free of despair,
- 28.2
vippasanno anāvilo;
clear and unclouded,
- 28.3
Kalyāṇasīlo medhāvī,
of good morals, intelligent:
- 28.4
dukkhassantakaro siyā”.
one would make an end of suffering.”
- 29.1
“Na vissase ekatiyesu evaṁ,
“Some householders, and even some renunciants,
- 29.2
Agārisu pabbajitesu cāpi;
are not to be trusted.
- 29.3
Sādhūpi hutvā na asādhu honti,
Some who were good later become bad;
- 29.4
Asādhu hutvā puna sādhu honti.
while some who were bad become good.”
- 30.1
Kāmacchando ca byāpādo,
“Sensual desire, ill will,
- 30.2
thinamiddhañca bhikkhuno;
dullness and drowsiness,
- 30.3
Uddhaccaṁ vicikicchā ca,
restlessness, and doubt:
- 30.4
pañcete cittakelisā.
these are the five mental stains for a monk.”
- 31.1
Yassa sakkariyamānassa,
“Whether they’re honored
- 31.2
asakkārena cūbhayaṁ;
or not honored, or both,
- 31.3
Samādhi na vikampati,
their immersion doesn’t waver
- 31.4
appamādavihārino.
as they abide in the immeasurables.
- 32.1
Taṁ jhāyinaṁ sātatikaṁ,
They persistently practice absorption
- 32.2
sukhumadiṭṭhivipassakaṁ;
with subtle view and discernment.
- 32.3
Upādānakkhayārāmaṁ,
Rejoicing in the ending of grasping,
- 32.4
āhu sappuriso iti.
they’re said to be a true person.”
- 33.1
Mahāsamuddo pathavī,
“The oceans and the earth,
- 33.2
pabbato anilopi ca;
the mountains and the wind—
- 33.3
Upamāya na yujjanti,
no simile can do justice
- 33.4
satthu varavimuttiyā.
to the Teacher’s magnificent liberation.”
- 34.1
Cakkānuvattako thero,
“The senior monk who keeps the wheel rolling,
- 34.2
mahāñāṇī samāhito;
he is very wise and serene.
- 34.3
Pathavāpaggisamāno,
Like earth, like water, like fire,
- 34.4
na rajjati na dussati.
he is neither attracted nor repelled.
- 35.1
Paññāpāramitaṁ patto,
He has attained the perfection of wisdom,
- 35.2
mahābuddhi mahāmati;
so intelligent and thoughtful.
- 35.3
Ajaḷo jaḷasamāno,
He is bright, but seems to be dull;
- 35.4
sadā carati nibbuto.
he always wanders, quenched.”
- 36.1
Pariciṇṇo mayā satthā,
“I’ve served the Teacher
- 36.2
… pe
and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.
- 36.3
…
The heavy burden is laid down,
- 36.4
bhavanetti samūhatā.
the leash to existence is eradicated.
- 37.1
Sampādethappamādena,
Persist with diligence:
- 37.2
esā me anusāsanī;
this is my instruction.
- 37.3
Handāhaṁ parinibbissaṁ,
Come, I’ll be fully quenched—
- 37.4
vippamuttomhi sabbadhī”ti.
I am everywhere free.”
