Kāḷīsutta
The female lay follower Kāḷī of Kuraraghara in Avantī asks Venerable Mahākaccāna about a verse spoken by the Buddha in “The Maidens’ Questions” (SN 4.25). He replies in terms of the ten universal dimensions of meditation.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง
ข้อ ๒๖สมัยหนึ่ง ท่านพระมหากัจจายนะอยู่ที่ภูเขาชื่อปวัตตะ ใกล้เมืองกุรรฆระ ในอวันตีชนบท ครั้งนั้นแล อุบาสิกาชื่อกาลีชาวเมืองกุรรฆระได้เข้าไปหาท่านพระมหากัจจายนะ ถึงที่อยู่ ได้อภิวาทท่านพระมหากัจจายนะแล้วนั่ง ณที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ครั้นแล้วได้ถามท่าน พระมหากัจจายนะว่า ท่านเจ้าข้า พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสพระพุทธพจน์นี้ไว้ในกุมารีปัญหาว่า
การบรรลุประโยชน์ เป็นความสงบแห่งหทัย เราชำนะ
เสนา คือ กิเลสอันมีรูปเป็นที่รัก เป็นที่ชื่นใจแล้ว เป็น
ผู้เดียวเพ่งอยู่ ได้รู้โดยลำดับซึ่งความสุข เพราะฉนั้น เรา
จึงไม่ทำความเป็นเพื่อนกับด้วยชน ความเป็นเพื่อนกับด้วย
ใครๆ ย่อมไม่ถึงพร้อมแก่เรา ดังนี้ ฯ
ท่านเจ้าข้า เนื้อความแห่งพระพุทธพจน์ที่พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสไว้โดยย่อนี้จะพึงเห็นได้ โดยพิสดารอย่างไรหนอ ฯ
เล่ม ๒๔ · หน้า ๔๔ท่านพระมหากัจจายนะตอบว่า ดูกรน้องหญิง สมณพราหมณ์พวกหนึ่งยังประโยชน์ ทั้งหลาย มีปฐวีกสิณสมาบัติเป็นอย่างยิ่งให้เกิดเฉพาะแล้ว ความที่ประโยชน์มีปฐวีกสิณสมาบัติ เป็นอย่างยิ่ง มีประมาณเท่าใด พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงรู้แล้วซึ่งความที่ประโยชน์มีปฐวีกสิณสมาบัติ เป็นอย่างยิ่งนั้น ครั้นทรงรู้แล้ว ได้ทรงเห็นเบื้องต้น ได้ทรงเห็นโทษ ได้ทรงเห็นธรรมเครื่อง สลัดออก ได้ทรงเห็นณาณทัสสนะว่าเป็นทางและมิใช่ทาง การบรรลุประโยชน์ เพราะเหตุ ทรงเห็นเบื้องต้น เพราะเหตุทรงเห็นโทษ เพราะเหตุทรงเห็นธรรมเครื่องสลัดออก เพราะเหตุ ทรงเห็นญาณทัสสนะว่าเป็นทางและมิใช่ทาง แห่งความที่ประโยชน์มีปฐวีกสิณสมาบัติเป็น อย่างยิ่งนั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคทรงทราบแล้วว่า เป็นความสงบแห่งหทัย ฯ
ดูกรน้องหญิง สมณพราหมณ์พวกหนึ่ง ยังประโยชน์ทั้งหลาย อันมีอาโปกสิณสมาบัติ เป็นอย่างยิ่งให้เกิดเฉพาะแล้ว ฯลฯ
ดูกรน้องหญิง สมณพราหมณ์พวกหนึ่ง ยังประโยชน์ทั้งหลายอันมีเตโชกสิณสมาบัติ เป็นอย่างยิ่งให้เกิดเฉพาะแล้ว ฯลฯ
ดูกรน้องหญิง สมณพราหมณ์พวกหนึ่ง ยังประโยชน์ทั้งหลายอันมีวาโยกสิณสมาบัติ เป็นอย่างยิ่งให้เกิดเฉพาะแล้ว ฯลฯ
ดูกรน้องหญิง สมณพราหมณ์พวกหนึ่ง ยังประโยชน์ทั้งหลายอันมีนีลกสิณสมาบัติ เป็นอย่างยิ่งให้เกิดเฉพาะแล้ว ฯลฯ
ดูกรน้องหญิง สมณพราหมณ์พวกหนึ่ง ยังประโยชน์ทั้งหลายอันมีปีตกสิณสมาบัติ เป็นอย่างยิ่งให้เกิดเฉพาะแล้ว ฯลฯ
ดูกรน้องหญิง สมณพราหมณ์พวกหนึ่ง ยังประโยชน์ทั้งหลายอันมีโลหิตกสิณสมาบัติ เป็นอย่างยิ่งให้เกิดเฉพาะแล้ว ฯลฯ
ดูกรน้องหญิง สมณพราหมณ์พวกหนึ่ง ยังประโยชน์ทั้งหลาย อันมีอากาสกสิณสมาบัติ เป็นอย่างยิ่ง ให้เกิดเฉพาะแล้ว ฯลฯ
ดูกรน้องหญิง สมณพราหมณ์พวกหนึ่ง ยังประโยชน์ทั้งหลาย อันมีวิญญาณกสิณสมาบัติ เป็นอย่างยิ่งให้เกิดเฉพาะแล้ว ความที่ประโยชน์มีวิญญาณกสิณสมาบัติเป็นอย่างยิ่ง มีประมาณ

คือ กิเลสอันมีรูปเป็นที่รัก เป็นที่ชื่นใจแล้ว เป็นผู้เดียว
เพ่งอยู่ ได้รู้โดยลำดับซึ่งความสุข เพราะฉะนั้น เราจึงไม่ทำ
ความเป็นเพื่อนด้วยชน ความเป็นเพื่อนด้วยใครๆ ย่อมไม่มี
แก่เรา ดังนี้ ฯ
เนื้อความแห่งพระพุทธพจน์ที่ตรัสไว้โดยย่อนี้ พึงเห็นโดยพิสดารอย่างนี้แล ฯ

Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā mahākaccāno avantīsu viharati kuraraghare pavatte pabbate.
At one time Venerable Mahākaccāna was staying in the land of the Avantis near Kuraraghara on Steep Mountain.

Atha kho kāḷī upāsikā kuraragharikā yenāyasmā mahākaccāno tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ mahākaccānaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho kāḷī upāsikā kuraragharikā āyasmantaṁ mahākaccānaṁ etadavoca:
Then the laywoman Kāḷī of Kurughara went up to Venerable Mahākaccāna, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him,

“vuttamidaṁ, bhante, bhagavatā kumāripañhesu:
“Sir, this was said by the Buddha in ‘The Maidens’ Questions’:

‘Atthassa pattiṁ hadayassa santiṁ,
‘I’ve reached the goal, peace of heart.
- 2.2
Jetvāna senaṁ piyasātarūpaṁ;
Having conquered the army
of the likable and pleasant, - 2.3
Ekohaṁ jhāyaṁ sukhamanubodhiṁ,
alone, practicing absorption, I awakened to bliss.
- 2.4
Tasmā janena na karomi sakkhiṁ;
That’s why I don’t get too close to people,
- 2.5
Sakkhī na sampajjati kenaci me’ti.
and no one gets too close to me.’

Imassa kho, bhante, bhagavatā saṅkhittena bhāsitassa kathaṁ vitthārena attho daṭṭhabbo”ti?
How should we see the detailed meaning of the Buddha’s brief statement?”

“Pathavīkasiṇasamāpattiparamā kho, bhagini, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā ‘attho’ti abhinibbattesuṁ.
“Sister, some ascetics and brahmins regard the attainment of the meditation on universal earth to be the ultimate. Thinking ‘this is the goal’, they are reborn.

Yāvatā kho, bhagini, pathavīkasiṇasamāpattiparamatā, tadabhiññāsi bhagavā.
The Buddha directly knew the extent to which the attainment of the meditation on universal earth was the ultimate.
- 4.3
Tadabhiññāya bhagavā assādamaddasa ādīnavamaddasa nissaraṇamaddasa maggāmaggañāṇadassanamaddasa.
Directly knowing this he saw the beginning, the drawback, and the escape. And he saw the knowledge and vision of what is the path and what is not the path.

Tassa assādadassanahetu ādīnavadassanahetu nissaraṇadassanahetu maggāmaggañāṇadassanahetu atthassa patti hadayassa santi viditā hoti.
Because he saw the beginning, the drawback, and the escape, and he saw the knowledge and vision of what is the path and what is not the path, he knew that he had reached the goal, peace of heart.

Iti kho, bhagini, yaṁ taṁ vuttaṁ bhagavatā kumāripañhesu:
So, sister, that’s how to understand the detailed meaning of what the Buddha said in brief in ‘The Maidens’ Questions’:
