You should associate with people who are equal or better than you.

ข้อ ๔๖๕ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคล ๓ จำพวกนี้ มีปรากฏอยู่ในโลก ๓ จำพวกเป็นไฉน คือ ๑. บุคคลที่ไม่ควรเสพ ไม่ควรคบ ไม่ควรเข้าไปนั่งใกล้ มีอยู่ ๒. บุคคลที่ควรเสพ ควรคบ ควรเข้าไปนั่งใกล้ มีอยู่๓. บุคคลที่จะต้องสักการะเคารพ แล้วจึงเสพ คบหา เข้าไปนั่งใกล้ มีอยู่ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็บุคคลที่ไม่ควรเสพ ไม่ควรคบ ไม่ควรเข้าไปนั่งใกล้เป็นไฉน บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ เป็นคนเลวโดยศีล สมาธิ ปัญญา บุคคลเห็นปานนี้ ไม่ควรเสพ ไม่ ควรคบ ไม่ควรเข้าไปนั่งใกล้ นอกจากจะเอ็นดูอนุเคราะห์กัน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็บุคคลที่ควร เสพ ควรคบ ควรเข้าไปนั่งใกล้เป็นไฉน บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ เป็นคนเช่นเดียวกับตน

โดยศีล สมาธิปัญญา บุคคลเห็นปานนี้ ควรเสพ ควรคบ ควรเข้าไปนั่งใกล้ ข้อนั้นเพราะ เหตุไร เพราะการสนทนา ปรารภศีล จักมีแก่พวกเราซึ่งเป็นคนเสมอกันโดยศีลด้วย การ

เล่ม ๒๐ · หน้า ๑๑๙สนทนาของเรานั้น จักเป็นถ้อยคำเป็นไปด้วย และจักเป็นความสำราญของเราด้วย การสนทนา ปรารภสมาธิ จักมีแก่พวกเราซึ่งเป็นคนเสมอกันโดยสมาธิด้วย การสนทนาของเรานั้น จักเป็น ถ้อยคำเป็นไปด้วย และจักเป็นความสำราญของเราด้วย การสนทนา ปรารภปัญญา จักมีแก่เราซึ่ง เป็นคนเสมอกันโดยปัญญาด้วย การสนทนาของเรานั้น จักเป็นถ้อยคำเป็นไปด้วย และจักเป็น ความสำราญของเราด้วย ฉะนั้น บุคคลเห็นปานนี้ จึงควรเสพ ควรคบ ควรเข้าไปนั่งใกล้ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็บุคคลที่จะต้องสักการะ เคารพแล้วจึงเสพคบหา เข้าไปนั่งใกล้ เป็นไฉน

บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ เป็นผู้ยิ่งโดยศีล สมาธิปัญญา บุคคลเห็นปานนี้ จักต้องสักการะเคารพ แล้วจึงเสพ คบหา เข้าไปนั่งใกล้ ข้อนั้นเพราะเหตุไร เพราะอาการเช่นนี้ จักบำเพ็ญศีลขันธ์ ที่ยังไม่สมบูรณ์ให้สมบูรณ์ หรือจักอนุเคราะห์ศีลขันธ์ที่บริบูรณ์ด้วยปัญญาในที่นั้นๆ จักบำเพ็ญ สมาธิขันธ์ที่ยังไม่บริบูรณ์ให้บริบูรณ์ หรือจักอนุเคราะห์สมาธิขันธ์บริบูรณ์ด้วยปัญญาในที่นั้นๆ

จักบำเพ็ญปัญญาขันธ์ที่ยังไม่บริบูรณ์ให้บริบูรณ์ หรือจักอนุเคราะห์ปัญญาขันธ์ที่บริบูรณ์ด้วยปัญญา ในที่นั้นๆ ฉะนั้น บุคคลเห็นปานนี้จึงควรสักการะเคารพ แล้วเสพ คบหา เข้าไปนั่งใกล้ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายบุคคล ๓ จำพวกนี้แล มีปรากฏอยู่ในโลก

ครั้นแล้วพระผู้มีพระภาคผู้สุคตพระศาสดา ตรัสไวยากรณภาษิตนี้จบลงแล้ว จึงได้ตรัส คาถาประพันธ์ต่อไปอีกว่า

บุรุษคบคนเลว ย่อมเลวลง คบคนที่เสมอกัน ย่อมไม่เสื่อมในกาลไหนๆ คบคนที่สูงกว่า ย่อมพลันเด่นขึ้น ฉะนั้น จึงควรคบคนที่สูงกว่าตน ดังนี้ ฯ

    It’s an individual who is inferior in terms of ethics, immersion, and wisdom.

    Evarūpo, bhikkhave, puggalo na sevitabbo na bhajitabbo na payirupāsitabbo aññatra anuddayā aññatra anukampā.

    You shouldn’t associate with, accompany, or attend such an individual, except out of kindness and sympathy.

    Katamo ca, bhikkhave, puggalo sevitabbo bhajitabbo payirupāsitabbo?

    Who is the individual you should associate with, accompany, and attend?

    Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo sadiso hoti sīlena samādhinā paññāya.

    It’s an individual who is similar in terms of ethics, immersion, and wisdom.

  14. 2.3

    Evarūpo, bhikkhave, puggalo sevitabbo bhajitabbo payirupāsitabbo.

    You should associate with, accompany, and attend such an individual.

    Taṁ kissa hetu?

    Why is that?

  16. 2.5

    Sīlasāmaññagatānaṁ sataṁ sīlakathā ca no bhavissati, sā ca no pavattinī bhavissati, sā ca no phāsu bhavissati.

    Thinking, ‘Since our ethical conduct is similar, we can discuss ethics, the conversation will flow, and we’ll both be at ease.

    Samādhisāmaññagatānaṁ sataṁ samādhikathā ca no bhavissati, sā ca no pavattinī bhavissati, sā ca no phāsu bhavissati.

    Since our immersion is similar, we can discuss immersion, the conversation will flow, and we’ll both be at ease.

    Paññāsāmaññagatānaṁ sataṁ paññākathā ca no bhavissati, sā ca no pavattinī bhavissati, sā ca no phāsu bhavissatīti.

    Since our wisdom is similar, we can discuss wisdom, the conversation will flow, and we’ll both be at ease.’

    Tasmā evarūpo puggalo sevitabbo bhajitabbo payirupāsitabbo.

    That’s why you should associate with, accompany, and attend such an individual.

    Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo adhiko hoti sīlena samādhinā paññāya.

    It’s an individual who is superior in terms of ethics, immersion, and wisdom.

  22. 3.3

    Evarūpo, bhikkhave, puggalo sakkatvā garuṁ katvā sevitabbo bhajitabbo payirupāsitabbo.

    You should associate with, accompany, and attend such an individual with honor and respect.

    Taṁ kissa hetu?

    Why is that?

  24. 3.5

    Iti aparipūraṁ vā sīlakkhandhaṁ paripūressāmi, paripūraṁ vā sīlakkhandhaṁ tattha tattha paññāya anuggahessāmi;

    Thinking, ‘I’ll fulfill the entire spectrum of ethical conduct I haven’t yet fulfilled, or support with wisdom in every situation the ethical conduct I’ve already fulfilled.

    aparipūraṁ vā samādhikkhandhaṁ paripūressāmi, paripūraṁ vā samādhikkhandhaṁ tattha tattha paññāya anuggahessāmi;

    I’ll fulfill the entire spectrum of immersion I haven’t yet fulfilled, or support with wisdom in every situation the immersion I’ve already fulfilled.

  26. 3.7

    aparipūraṁ vā paññākkhandhaṁ paripūressāmi, paripūraṁ vā paññākkhandhaṁ tattha tattha paññāya anuggahessāmīti.

    I’ll fulfill the entire spectrum of wisdom I haven’t yet fulfilled, or support with wisdom in every situation the wisdom I’ve already fulfilled.’

  27. 3.8

    Tasmā evarūpo puggalo sakkatvā garuṁ katvā sevitabbo bhajitabbo payirupāsitabbo.

    That’s why you should associate with, accompany, and attend this individual with honor and respect.

  28. 3.9

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasminti.

    These are the three individuals found in the world.

  29. 4.1

    Nihīyati puriso nihīnasevī,

    A man who associates with an inferior goes downhill,

  30. 4.2

    Na ca hāyetha kadāci tulyasevī;

    but associating with an equal, you’ll never decline;

  31. 4.3

    Seṭṭhamupanamaṁ udeti khippaṁ,

    following the best, you’ll quickly rise up,

  32. 4.4

    Tasmā attano uttariṁ bhajethā”ti.

    so you should keep company
    with people better than you.”

    Chaṭṭhaṁ.
