ข้อ ๔๖๙ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคล ๓ จำพวกนี้ มีปรากฏอยู่ในโลก ๓ จำพวกเป็นไฉน คือ บุคคลมีปัญญาคว่ำ ๑ บุคคลมีปัญญาเช่นกับตัก ๑บุคคลมีปัญญากว้างขวาง ๑ ดูกรภิกษุ ทั้งหลาย บุคคลที่มีปัญญาคว่ำเป็นไฉนบุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ หมั่นไปวัดเพื่อฟังธรรมในสำนัก ของภิกษุเสมอ ภิกษุย่อมแสดงธรรมอันงามในเบื้องต้น งามในท่ามกลาง งามในที่สุด ประกาศ พรหมจรรย์พร้อมทั้งอรรถทั้งพยัญชนะบริสุทธิ์บริบูรณ์สิ้นเชิงแก่เขา เขานั่งบนอาสนะนั้น จำเบื้องต้น ท่ามกลาง ที่สุดของกถานั้นไม่ได้ ถึงลุกจากอาสนะแล้ว ก็จำเบื้องต้น ท่ามกลาง ที่สุดของกถานั้นไม่ได้ เปรียบเหมือนหม้อคว่ำ ถึงจะเอาน้ำรดลงที่หม้อนั้น ย่อมราดไป หาขัง อยู่ไม่ แม้ฉันใด บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน หมั่นไปวัดเพื่อฟังธรรมในสำนัก ของภิกษุเสมอ ภิกษุย่อมแสดงธรรมอันงามในเบื้องต้น งามในท่ามกลาง งามในที่สุด ประกาศ พรหมจรรย์พร้อมทั้งอรรถทั้งพยัญชนะบริสุทธิ์ บริบูรณ์สิ้นเชิงแก่เขา เขานั่งบนอาสนะนั้น จำเบื้องต้น ท่ามกลาง ที่สุดของกถานั้นไม่ได้ แม้ลุกจากอาสนะนั้นแล้ว ก็จำเบื้องต้น ท่ามกลาง ที่ สุดของกถานั้นไว้ไม่ได้ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าบุคคลมีปัญญาคว่ำ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ก็บุคคล ที่มีปัญญา เหมือนตักเป็นไฉน บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ หมั่นไปวัดเพื่อฟังธรรมในสำนักของภิกษุ เสมอ ภิกษุย่อมแสดงธรรมอันงามในเบื้องต้น งามในท่ามกลาง งามในที่สุด ประกาศพรหม จรรย์พร้อมทั้งอรรถทั้งพยัญชนะบริสุทธิ์บริบูรณ์สิ้นเชิงแก่เขา เขานั่งบนอาสนะนั้น จำเบื้องต้น

พุทรา เกลื่อนกลาด เขาลุกจากอาสนะนั้น พึงทำเรี่ยราด เพราะเผลอสติ แม้ฉันใด บุคคล บางคนในโลกนี้ ก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกันหมั่นไปวัดเพื่อฟังธรรมในสำนักของภิกษุเสมอ ภิกษุย่อม แสดงธรรมอันงามในเบื้องต้น งามในท่ามกลาง งามในที่สุด ประกาศพรหมจรรย์พร้อมทั้งอรรถ ทั้งพยัญชนะบริสุทธิ์บริบูรณ์สิ้นเชิงแก่เขา เขานั่งบนอาสนะนั้น จำเบื้องต้น ท่ามกลาง ที่สุด ของกถานั้นได้ ครั้นลุกจากอาสนะนั้นแล้ว จำเบื้องต้น ท่ามกลางที่สุดของกถานั้นไว้ไม่ได้ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าบุคคลมีปัญญาเหมือนตัก ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลายก็บุคคลที่มีปัญญากว้าง ขวางเป็นไฉน บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ หมั่นไปวัดเพื่อฟังธรรมในสำนักของภิกษุเสมอ ภิกษุ ย่อมแสดงธรรมอันงามในเบื้องต้น งามในท่ามกลาง งามในที่สุด ประกาศพรหมจรรย์พร้อมทั้ง อรรถทั้งพยัญชนะบริสุทธิ์บริบูรณ์สิ้นเชิงแก่เขา เขานั่งบนอาสนะนั้น จำเบื้องต้น ท่ามกลาง ที่สุด ของกถานั้นได้ แม้ลุกจากอาสนะนั้นแล้ว ก็จำเบื้องต้น ท่ามกลาง ที่สุดของกถานั้นได้ เปรียบ เหมือนหม้อหงาย เอาน้ำเทใส่ไปในหม้อนั้น ย่อมขังอยู่หาไหลไปไม่ แม้ฉันใด บุคคลบางคน ในโลกนี้ ก็ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน หมั่นไปวัดเพื่อฟังธรรมในสำนักของภิกษุเสมอ ภิกษุย่อมแสดง ธรรมอันงามในเบื้องต้น งามในท่ามกลาง งามในที่สุด ประกาศพรหมจรรย์พร้อมทั้งอรรถทั้ง พยัญชนะบริสุทธิ์บริบูรณ์สิ้นเชิงแก่เขา เขานั่งบนอาสนะนั้น จำเบื้องต้น ท่ามกลาง ที่สุดของ กถานั้นได้ ถึงลุกจากอาสนะนั้นแล้ว ก็จำเบื้องต้น ท่ามกลางที่สุดของกถานั้นได้ ดูกรภิกษุ ทั้งหลาย นี้เรียกว่าบุคคลมีปัญญากว้างขวาง ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคล๓ จำพวกนี้แล มีปรากฏ อยู่ในโลก ฯ
บุรุษมีปัญญาคว่ำ เป็นคนเขลา ไร้ปัญญาเป็นเครื่องพิจารณา บุรุษเช่นนั้น แม้หากจะหมั่นไปในสำนักของภิกษุเสมอ ก็ไม่อาจจะเล่าเรียนเบื้องต้น ท่ามกลางและที่สุดของกถาได้ เพราะเขาไม่มีปัญญา บุรุษมีปัญญาเหมือน ตัก เรากล่าวว่าดีกว่าบุรุษที่มีปัญญาคว่ำ บุรุษเช่นนั้นถึงแม้จะไปใน สำนักของภิกษุเสมอ นั่งบนอาสนะนั้น เรียนเบื้องต้น ท่ามกลางและ ที่สุดของกถาได้ ครั้นลุกมาแล้ว กำหนดจดจำพยัญชนะไม่ได้ เพราะ พยัญชนะที่เขาเรียนแล้วเลอะเลือนไป ส่วนบุรุษผู้มีปัญญากว้างขวาง เรากล่าวว่าดีกว่าบุรุษที่มีปัญญาเหมือนตักบุรุษเช่นนั้น แม้ไปในสำนัก

“Tayome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.
“These three individuals are found in the world.

Katame tayo?
What three?
- 1.3
Avakujjapañño puggalo, ucchaṅgapañño puggalo, puthupañño puggalo.
One with upside-down wisdom, one with wisdom on their lap, and one with widespread wisdom.

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, avakujjapañño puggalo?
And who is the individual with upside-down wisdom?
- 1.5
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ārāmaṁ gantā hoti abhikkhaṇaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ santike dhammassavanāya.
It’s an individual who often goes to the monastery to hear the teaching in the presence of the mendicants.

Tassa bhikkhū dhammaṁ desenti ādikalyāṇaṁ majjhekalyāṇaṁ pariyosānakalyāṇaṁ sātthaṁ sabyañjanaṁ, kevalaparipuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ pakāsenti.
The mendicants teach them Dhamma that’s good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased. And they reveal a spiritual practice that’s entirely full and pure.

So tasmiṁ āsane nisinno tassā kathāya neva ādiṁ manasi karoti, na majjhaṁ manasi karoti, na pariyosānaṁ manasi karoti;
But even while sitting there, that person doesn’t apply the mind to the beginning, middle, or end of the discussion.

vuṭṭhitopi tamhā āsanā tassā kathāya neva ādiṁ manasi karoti, na majjhaṁ manasi karoti, na pariyosānaṁ manasi karoti.
And when they rise from their seat, they don’t apply the mind to the beginning, middle, or end of the discussion.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, kumbho nikujjo tatra udakaṁ āsittaṁ vivaṭṭati, no saṇṭhāti;
It’s like when a pot full of water is tipped over, so the water drains out and doesn’t stay.
- 1.10
evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo ārāmaṁ gantā hoti abhikkhaṇaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ santike dhammassavanāya.
In the same way, an individual often goes to the monastery to hear the teaching in the presence of the mendicants.

Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, purisassa ucchaṅge nānākhajjakāni ākiṇṇāni—
It’s like a person who has different kinds of food crammed on their lap—

tilā taṇḍulā modakā badarā.
such as sesame, rice, sweets, or jujube—
- 2.8
So tamhā āsanā vuṭṭhahanto satisammosā pakireyya.
so that if they rise from the seat without mindfulness, everything gets scattered.

Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo ārāmaṁ gantā hoti abhikkhaṇaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ santike dhammassavanāya.

It’s like when a pot full of water is set straight, so the water stays and doesn’t drain out.

evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo ārāmaṁ gantā hoti abhikkhaṇaṁ bhikkhūnaṁ santike dhammassavanāya.
In the same way, an individual often goes to the monastery to hear the teaching in the presence of the mendicants.

These are the three individuals found in the world.

A person with upside-down wisdom,

dummedho avicakkhaṇo;
is a simpleton and cannot see,
- 4.3
Abhikkhaṇampi ce hoti,
and even if they frequently

gantā bhikkhūna santike.
go into the mendicants’ presence,

Ādiṁ kathāya majjhañca,
such a person can’t learn
- 5.2
pariyosānañca tādiso;
the beginning, middle, or end

Uggahetuṁ na sakkoti,
of the discussion,
- 5.4
paññā hissa na vijjati.
for their wisdom is lacking.

Ucchaṅgapañño puriso,
the individual with wisdom on their lap
- 6.2
seyyo etena vuccati;
is better than that, it’s said;
- 6.3
Abhikkhaṇampi ce hoti,
but even if they frequently
- 6.4
gantā bhikkhūna santike.
go into the mendicants’ presence,
- 7.1
Ādiṁ kathāya majjhañca,
such a person can only learn
- 7.2
pariyosānañca tādiso;
the beginning, middle, and end
- 7.3
Nisinno āsane tasmiṁ,
while sitting in that seat;
- 7.4
uggahetvāna byañjanaṁ;
but they’ve only grasped the phrasing,
- 7.5
Vuṭṭhito nappajānāti,
for when they rise their understanding fails,
- 7.6
gahitaṁ hissa mussati.
and what they’ve learned is lost.
- 8.1
Puthupañño ca puriso,
The person with widespread wisdom
- 8.2
seyyo etehi vuccati;
is better than that, it’s said;
- 8.3
Abhikkhaṇampi ce hoti,
and if they, too, frequently
- 8.4
gantā bhikkhūna santike.
go into the mendicants’ presence,
- 9.1
Ādiṁ kathāya majjhañca,
one such can learn
- 9.2
pariyosānañca tādiso;
the beginning, middle, and end
- 9.3
Nisinno āsane tasmiṁ,
while sitting in that seat;
- 9.4
uggahetvāna byañjanaṁ.
and when they’ve grasped the phrasing,
- 10.1
Dhāreti seṭṭhasaṅkappo,
they remember it with the best of intentions.
- 10.2
Abyaggamānaso naro;
That peaceful-hearted man,
- 10.3
Dhammānudhammappaṭipanno,
practicing in line with the teaching,
- 10.4
Dukkhassantakaro siyā”ti.
would make an end of suffering.”
