Fields

The duties of a farmer are like those of a mendicant.

เล่ม ๒๐ · หน้า ๒๑๙ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย กิจที่ควรทำแต่แรกของคฤหบดีชาวนา๓ อย่างนี้ ๓ อย่าง เป็นไฉน คือ คฤหบดีชาวนาในโลกนี้ ก่อนอื่นจะต้องไถคราดนาให้ดีก่อน แล้วก็เพาะ พืชลงไปตามกาล ครั้นแล้วก็ไขเอาน้ำเข้าบ้างระบายเอาออกเสียบ้างตามสมัย ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย กิจที่ควรทำแต่แรกของคฤหบดีชาวนา ๓ อย่างนี้แล ฉันใด กิจที่ควรทำก่อนของภิกษุ ๓ อย่างนี้ ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน๓ อย่างเป็นไฉน คือ การสมาทานอธิศีลสิกขา ๑ การสมาทานอธิจิตต สิกขา ๑การสมาทานอธิปัญญาสิกขา ๑ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย กิจที่ควรทำก่อนของภิกษุ ๓ อย่างนี้แล เพราะฉะนั้นแหละ ท่านทั้งหลายพึงศึกษาเช่นนี้ว่า เราจักมีความพอใจอย่างแรงกล้า ในการสมาทานอธิศีลสิกขา เราจักมีความพอใจอย่างแรงกล้าในการสมาทานอธิจิตตสิกขา เราจักมี ความพอใจอย่างแรงกล้าในการสมาทานอธิปัญญาสิกขา ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ท่านทั้งหลายพึงศึกษา เช่นนี้แล ฯ

    “Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, kassakassa gahapatissa pubbe karaṇīyāni.

    “Mendicants, a farmer has three primary duties.

    Katamāni tīṇi?

    What three?

  6. 1.3

    Idha, bhikkhave, kassako gahapati paṭikacceva khettaṁ sukaṭṭhaṁ karoti sumatikataṁ.

    A farmer first of all makes sure the field is well ploughed and tilled.

  7. 1.4

    Paṭikacceva khettaṁ sukaṭṭhaṁ karitvā sumatikataṁ kālena bījāni patiṭṭhāpeti.

    Next they plant seeds in season.

  8. 1.5

    Kālena bījāni patiṭṭhāpetvā samayena udakaṁ abhinetipi apanetipi.

    When the time is right, they irrigate the field and then drain it.

  9. 1.6

    Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi kassakassa gahapatissa pubbe karaṇīyāni.

    These are the three primary duties of a farmer.

    Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tīṇimāni bhikkhussa pubbe karaṇīyāni.

    In the same way, a mendicant has three primary duties.

    Katamāni tīṇi?

    What three?

    Adhisīlasikkhāsamādānaṁ, adhicittasikkhāsamādānaṁ, adhipaññāsikkhāsamādānaṁ—

    Undertaking the training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.

    imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi bhikkhussa pubbe karaṇīyāni.

    These are the three primary duties of a mendicant.

  14. 3.1

    Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ:

    So you should train like this:

    ‘tibbo no chando bhavissati adhisīlasikkhāsamādāne, tibbo no chando bhavissati adhicittasikkhāsamādāne, tibbo no chando bhavissati adhipaññāsikkhāsamādāne’ti.

    ‘We will have keen enthusiasm for undertaking the training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.’

  16. 3.3

    Evañhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.

    That’s how you should train.”
