เล่ม ๒๑ · หน้า ๑๓๐ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคล ๔ จำพวกนี้ มีปรากฏอยู่ในโลก ๔ จำพวกเป็นไฉน ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ มีใจประกอบด้วยเมตตาแผ่ไปตลอดทิศหนึ่งอยู่ ทิศที่สอง ที่สาม ที่สี่ก็เหมือนกัน ตามนัยนี้ทั้งเบื้องบน เบื้องล่าง เบื้องขวาง แผ่ไปตลอดโลก ทั่วสัตว์ ทุกเหล่า ในที่ทุกสถาน ด้วยใจประกอบด้วยเมตตาอันไพบูลย์ ถึงความเป็นใหญ่ หาประมาณมิได้ ไม่มีเวร ไม่มีความเบียดเบียนอยู่ รูป เวทนา สัญญา สังขาร วิญญาณ อันใดมีอยู่ในเมตตา ฌานนั้น บุคคลนั้นพิจารณาเห็นธรรมเหล่านั้น โดยความเป็นของไม่เที่ยง เป็นทุกข์ เป็นดังโรค

เป็นดังหัวฝี เป็นดังลูกศร เป็นของทนได้ยากเป็นของเบียดเบียน เป็นของไม่เชื่อฟัง เป็นของ ต้องทำลายไป เป็นของว่างเปล่าเป็นของไม่ใช่ตน บุคคลนั้น เมื่อตายไป ย่อมเข้าถึงความเป็น สหายของเทวดาเหล่าสุทธาวาส ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความอุบัตินี้แลไม่ทั่วไปด้วยปุถุชน ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ มีใจประกอบด้วยกรุณา … ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ มีใจประกอบด้วยมุทิตา … ฯ

อีกประการหนึ่ง บุคคลบางคนในโลกนี้ มีใจประกอบด้วยอุเบกขาแผ่ไปตลอดทิศหนึ่ง อยู่ ทิศที่สอง ที่สาม ที่สี่ก็เหมือนกัน ตามนัยนี้ ทั้งเบื้องบน เบื้องล่าง เบื้องขวาง แผ่ไปตลอด โลก ทั่วสัตว์ทุกเหล่า ในที่ทุกสถาน ด้วยใจประกอบด้วยอุเบกขาอันไพบูลย์ ถึงความเป็นใหญ่ หาประมาณมิได้ ไม่มีเวรไม่มีความเบียดเบียนอยู่ รูป เวทนา สัญญา สังขาร วิญญาณ อันใด มี อยู่ในอุเบกขาฌานนั้น บุคคลนั้นพิจารณาเห็นธรรมเหล่านั้น โดยความเป็นของไม่เที่ยง เป็นทุกข์ เป็นดังโรค เป็นดังหัวฝี เป็นดังลูกศร เป็นของทนได้ยากเป็นของเบียดเบียน เป็นของไม่เชื่อฟัง เป็นของต้องทำลายไป เป็นของว่างเปล่าเป็นของไม่ใช่ตน บุคคลนั้นเมื่อตายไป ย่อมเข้าถึงความ เป็นสหายของเทวดาเหล่าสุทธาวาส ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ความอุบัตินี้แลไม่ทั่วไปด้วยปุถุชน ดูกร ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บุคคล ๔ จำพวกนี้แล มีปรากฏอยู่ในโลก ฯ

    “Cattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ.

    “Mendicants, these four individuals are found in the world.

    What four?

    Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo mettāsahagatena cetasā ekaṁ disaṁ pharitvā viharati, tathā dutiyaṁ tathā tatiyaṁ tathā catutthaṁ. Iti uddhamadho tiriyaṁ sabbadhi sabbattatāya sabbāvantaṁ lokaṁ mettāsahagatena cetasā vipulena mahaggatena appamāṇena averena abyāpajjena pharitvā viharati.

    Firstly, an individual meditates spreading a heart full of love to one direction, and to the second, and to the third, and to the fourth. In the same way above, below, across, everywhere, all around, they spread a heart full of love to the whole world—abundant, expansive, limitless, free of enmity and ill will.

    So yadeva tattha hoti rūpagataṁ vedanāgataṁ saññāgataṁ saṅkhāragataṁ viññāṇagataṁ te dhamme aniccato dukkhato rogato gaṇḍato sallato aghato ābādhato parato palokato suññato anattato samanupassati.

    They contemplate the phenomena there—included in form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness—as impermanent, as suffering, as diseased, as a boil, as a dart, as gloom, as an affliction, as alien, as breaking apart, as empty, as not-self.

    So kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā suddhāvāsānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjati.

    When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in the company of the gods of the pure abodes.

    Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, upapatti asādhāraṇā puthujjanehi.

    This rebirth is distinct from that of ordinary people.
