“Punāparaṁ yadā homi,
“Then again when I was
- 1.2
nagare brahmavaḍḍhane;
in the city of Brahmavaḍḍhana,
- 1.3
Tattha kulavare seṭṭhe,
I was reborn there
- 1.4
mahāsāle ajāyahaṁ.
in a fine, wealthy, and eminent family.
- 2.1
Tadāpi lokaṁ disvāna,
Even so, I saw that the world
- 2.2
Andhībhūtaṁ tamotthaṭaṁ;
had become blind, smothered in darkness.
- 2.3
Cittaṁ bhavato patikuṭati,
My mind recoiled from rebirth,
- 2.4
Tuttavegahataṁ viya.
as if harshly pricked by a goad.
- 3.1
Disvāna vividhaṁ pāpaṁ,
Seeing the many forms of wickedness,
- 3.2
evaṁ cintesahaṁ tadā;
I thought to myself:

‘Kadāhaṁ gehā nikkhamma,
‘When shall I leave the house

pavisissāmi kānanaṁ’.
and enter the forest?’

Tadāpi maṁ nimantesuṁ,
Then too my relatives invited me
- 4.2
kāmabhogehi ñātayo;
to enjoy the pleasures of the senses.
- 4.3
Tesampi chandamācikkhiṁ,
I told them of my desire, saying,
- 4.4
‘mā nimantetha tehi maṁ’.
‘Do not invite me to such things!’

Yo me kaniṭṭhako bhātā,
My younger brother,

nando nāmāsi paṇḍito;
who was named Nanda the astute,
- 5.3
Sopi maṁ anusikkhanto,
followed my ethical practices,
- 5.4
pabbajjaṁ samarocayi.
and chose to go forth.
- 6.1
Ahaṁ soṇo ca nando ca,
I, Soṇa, and Nanda,
- 6.2
ubho mātāpitā mama;
and both my mother and father,
- 6.3
Tadāpi bhoge chaḍḍetvā,
then discarded our riches
- 6.4
pāvisimhā mahāvanan”ti.
and entered the great forest.”
