SN 2.21

Sivasutta

The deity Siva says one should associate only with the good, and this will lead to happiness. The Buddha adds that associating with the good leads to the end of suffering. Siva is the Pali spelling of Sanskrit Śiva, and this marks a rare appearance of a god of this name in the early texts.

ฉบับหลวงสิวสูตรที่ ๑

ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับมาแล้วอย่างนี้

สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ พระวิหารเชตวัน อารามของท่านอนาถบิณฑิกเศรษฐี เขตพระนครสาวัตถี ครั้งนั้น เมื่อปฐมยามล่วงแล้ว สิวเทวบุตรมีวรรณะงามยิ่งนัก ยังพระวิหารเชตวันทั้งสิ้นให้สว่าง เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ครั้นแล้ว จึงถวายอภิวาทพระผู้มีพระภาคแล้วได้ยืนอยู่ ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่ง ฯ

สิวเทพบุตร ครั้นยืนอยู่ ณ ที่ควรส่วนข้างหนึ่งแล้ว ได้กล่าวคาถาเหล่านี้ในสำนักพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า บุคคลควรสมาคมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ ควรทำความสนิทสนมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ บุคคลรู้ทั่วถึงพระสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้ว เป็นผู้ประเสริฐ ไม่เป็นผู้ตกต่ำ บุคคลควรสมาคมกับพวกสัตบุรุษเท่านั้น ควรทำความสนิทสนมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ บุคคลรู้ทั่วถึงพระสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้ว ย่อมได้ปัญญา ไม่คลาดเป็นอย่างอื่น บุคคลควรสมาคมกับพวกสัตบุรุษเท่านั้น ควรทำความสนิทสนมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ บุคคลรู้ทั่วถึงพระสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้ว ย่อมไม่เศร้าโศกในท่ามกลางแห่งความเศร้าโศก บุคคลควรสมาคมกับพวกสัตบุรุษเท่านั้น ควรทำความสนิทสนมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ บุคคลรู้ทั่วถึงพระสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้ว ย่อมรุ่งโรจน์ในท่ามกลางหมู่ญาติ บุคคลควรสมาคมกับพวกสัตบุรุษเท่านั้น ควรทำความสนิทสนมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ เหล่าสัตว์รู้ทั่วถึงพระสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้วย่อมถึงสุคติ บุคคลควรสมาคมกับพวกสัตบุรุษเท่านั้น ควรทำความสนิทสนมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ เหล่าสัตว์รู้ทั่วถึงพระสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้ว ย่อมยืนยงตลอดไป ฯ

ลำดับนั้น พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสตอบสิวเทวบุตรด้วยพระคาถาว่า บุคคลควรสมาคมกับพวกสัตบุรุษเท่านั้น ควรทำความสนิทสนมกับพวกสัตบุรุษ บุคคลรู้ทั่วถึงสัทธรรมของพวกสัตบุรุษแล้ว ย่อมพ้นจากทุกข์ทั้งปวง ฯ

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

    So I have heard.

    ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

    Atha kho sivo devaputto abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi.

    Then, late at night, the glorious godling Shiva, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side,

    Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho sivo devaputto bhagavato santike imā gāthāyo abhāsi:

    Atha kho bhagavā sivaṁ devaputtaṁ gāthāya paccabhāsi:

    Then the Buddha replied to Shiva in verse:
