Vesālīsutta

At the Great Wood, the householder Ugga of Vesālī asks the Buddha why some become awakened in this very life, while others do not.

ข้อความไทยนี้คือ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาไทย ฉบับหลวง ซึ่งแปลจากพระไตรปิฎกบาลีคนละฉบับกับบาลีที่แสดงอยู่ด้านล่าง จึงไม่ได้เรียงตรงกันบรรทัดต่อบรรทัด — อ่านเป็นสำนวนแปลอิสระอีกฉบับหนึ่ง

สมัยหนึ่ง พระผู้มีพระภาคประทับอยู่ ณ กูฏาคารศาลา ในป่ามหาวัน ใกล้พระนครเวสาลี ครั้งนั้นแล อุคคคฤหบดีชาวเมืองเวสาลีได้เข้าไปเฝ้าพระผู้มีพระภาคถึงที่ประทับ ฯลฯ ครั้นแล้วได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า ข้าแต่พระองค์ผู้เจริญ เหตุปัจจัยอะไรหนอแล เป็นเครื่องให้สัตว์บางพวกในโลกนี้ไม่ปรินิพพานในปัจจุบัน อนึ่ง เหตุปัจจัยอะไรเป็นเครื่องให้สัตว์บางพวกในโลกนี้ปรินิพพานในปัจจุบัน พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสว่า มีอยู่แล คฤหบดี รูปทั้งหลายอันบุคคลพึงรู้แจ้งด้วยจักษุอันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัด หากว่าภิกษุเพลิดเพลิน หมกมุ่น พัวพันรูปนั้น เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเพลิดเพลิน หมกมุ่น พัวพันรูปนั้นอยู่ วิญญาณอันอาศัยซึ่งตัณหานั้นย่อมมี อุปาทานอันอาศัยซึ่งตัณหานั้นก็ย่อมมี ภิกษุผู้มีอุปาทานย่อมไม่ปรินิพพานฯลฯ ธรรมารมณ์อันบุคคลพึงรู้แจ้งด้วยใจอันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัด หากว่าภิกษุเพลิดเพลิน หมกมุ่น พัวพันธรรมารมณ์นั้น เมื่อภิกษุนั้นเพลิดเพลิน หมกมุ่น พัวพันธรรมารมณ์นั้นอยู่ วิญญาณอันอาศัยซึ่งตัณหานั้นย่อมมี อุปาทานอันอาศัยซึ่งตัณหานั้นก็ย่อมมี ภิกษุผู้มีอุปาทานย่อมไม่ปรินิพพาน ดูกรคฤหบดี เหตุปัจจัยนี้แล เป็นเครื่องให้สัตว์บางพวกในโลกนี้ไม่ปรินิพพานในปัจจุบัน ฯ

ดูกรคฤหบดี รูปอันบุคคลพึงรู้แจ้งด้วยจักษุอันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัด หากว่าภิกษุไม่เพลิดเพลิน ไม่หมกมุ่น ไม่พัวพันรูปนั้น เมื่อภิกษุนั้นไม่เพลิดเพลิน ไม่หมกมุ่น ไม่พัวพันรูปนั้นอยู่ วิญญาณอันอาศัยซึ่งตัณหานั้นย่อมไม่มี อุปาทานอันอาศัยซึ่งตัณหานั้นย่อมไม่มี ภิกษุผู้ไม่มีอุปาทานย่อมปรินิพพาน ฯลฯ ธรรมารมณ์อันบุคคลพึงรู้แจ้งด้วยใจอันน่าปรารถนา น่าใคร่ น่าพอใจ น่ารัก ชักให้ใคร่ ชวนให้กำหนัด หากภิกษุไม่เพลิดเพลิน ไม่หมกมุ่น ไม่พัวพันธรรมารมณ์นั้น เมื่อภิกษุนั้นไม่เพลิดเพลิน ไม่หมกมุ่น ไม่พัวพันธรรมารมณ์นั้นอยู่ วิญญาณอันอาศัยซึ่งตัณหานั้นย่อมไม่มี อุปาทานอันอาศัยซึ่งตัณหานั้นย่อมไม่มี ภิกษุผู้ไม่มีอุปาทานย่อมปรินิพพาน ดูกรคฤหบดี เหตุปัจจัยนี้แล เป็นเครื่องให้สัตว์บางพวกในโลกนี้ปรินิพพานในปัจจุบัน ฯ

    Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.

    At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

    Atha kho uggo gahapati vesāliko yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho uggo gahapati vesāliko bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Then the householder Ugga of Vesālī went up to the Buddha, sat down to one side, and said to him:

    “ko nu kho, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo yena m’idhekacce sattā diṭṭheva dhamme no parinibbāyanti?

    “What is the cause, sir, what is the reason why some sentient beings are not fully extinguished in this very life?

    Ko pana, bhante, hetu, ko paccayo yena m’idhekacce sattā diṭṭheva dhamme parinibbāyantī”ti?

    What is the cause, sir, what is the reason why some sentient beings are fully extinguished in this very life?”

    “Santi kho, gahapati, cakkhuviññeyyā rūpā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā.

    “Householder, there are sights known by the eye, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

    Tañce bhikkhu abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiṭṭhati. Tassa taṁ abhinandato abhivadato ajjhosāya tiṭṭhato tannissitaṁ viññāṇaṁ hoti tadupādānaṁ.

    If a mendicant approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging to them, their consciousness has that as support and fuel for grasping.

    Saupādāno, gahapati, bhikkhu no parinibbāyati …pe…

    A mendicant with fuel for grasping does not become extinguished.

    santi kho, gahapati, jivhāviññeyyā rasā …pe…

    There are sounds … smells … tastes … touches …

    santi kho, gahapati, manoviññeyyā dhammā iṭṭhā kantā manāpā piyarūpā kāmūpasaṁhitā rajanīyā.

    ideas known by the mind, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

    Tañce bhikkhu abhinandati abhivadati ajjhosāya tiṭṭhati. Tassa taṁ abhinandato abhivadato ajjhosāya tiṭṭhato tannissitaṁ viññāṇaṁ hoti tadupādānaṁ.

    If a mendicant approves, welcomes, and keeps clinging to them, their consciousness has that as support and fuel for grasping.
