Paṭhamaabhisandasutta

The four factors of stream-entry—with ethics as the fourth—are streams of merit, and like the ocean cannot be counted. With verses.

เล่ม ๑๙ · หน้า ๓๙๗ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันเป็นปัจจัยนำมาซึ่งความสุข ๔ ประการนี้ ๔ ประการเป็นไฉน? อริยสาวกในธรรมวินัยนี้ประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันไม่ หวั่นไหวในพระพุทธเจ้าว่า แม้เพราะเหตุนี้ๆ พระผู้มีพระภาคพระองค์นั้น เป็นพระอรหันต์ ฯลฯ เป็นผู้จำแนกธรรม นี้เป็นห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันนำมาซึ่งความสุขประการที่ ๑ อีกประการหนึ่ง อริยสาวกประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันไม่หวั่นไหวในพระธรรม … นี้เป็นห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันนำมาซึ่งความสุขประการที่ ๒ อีกประการหนึ่ง อริยสาวกประกอบด้วยความเลื่อมใสอันไม่หวั่นไหวในพระสงฆ์ … นี้เป็นห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันนำมาซึ่งความสุขประการที่ ๓ อีกประการหนึ่ง อริยสาวกประกอบด้วยศีลที่พระอริยเจ้าใคร่แล้ว ไม่ขาด ฯลฯ เป็นไปเพื่อสมาธิ นี้เป็นห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันนำมาซึ่งความสุขประการที่ ๔ ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันเป็นปัจจัยนำมาซึ่งความสุข ๔ ประการนี้แล.

ข้อ ๑๖๐๔ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ใครๆ จะนับประมาณบุญของอริยสาวกผู้ประกอบด้วยห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล ๔ ประการนี้ว่า ห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันเป็นปัจจัยนำมาซึ่งความสุข มีประมาณเท่านี้ มิใช่กระทำได้โดยง่าย ที่แท้ห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล ย่อมถึงความนับว่า เป็นกองบุญใหญ่ จะนับประมาณมิได้.

ข้อ ๑๖๐๕ดูกรภิกษุทั้งหลาย ใครๆ จะนับประมาณน้ำในมหาสมุทรว่า ประมาณเท่านี้อาฬหกะ หรือว่าร้อยอาฬหกะ พันอาหฬกะ แสนอาฬหกะ มิใช่กระทำได้โดยง่าย ที่แท้ น้ำย่อมถึงความนับว่า เป็นกองน้ำใหญ่ จะนับประมาณมิได้ แม้ฉันใด ใครๆ จะประมาณบุญของอริยสาวกผู้ประกอบด้วยห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล ๔ ประการนี้ว่า ห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล อันเป็นปัจจัยนำมาซึ่งความสุข มีประมาณเท่านี้ มิใช่กระทำได้โดยง่าย ที่แท้ ห้วงบุญ ห้วงกุศล ย่อมถึงความนับว่า เป็นกองบุญใหญ่ จะนับจะประมาณมิได้ ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน พระผู้มีพระภาคได้ตรัสพระพุทธพจน์นี้ว่า

แม่น้ำเป็นอันมากที่หมู่คือคณะนรชนอาศัยแล้ว ไหลไปยังสาคร

ทะเลหลวง ซึ่งจะประมาณมิได้ เป็นที่ขังน้ำอย่างใหญ่ มีสิ่งที่น่ากลัวมาก

เป็นที่อยู่ของหมู่รัตนะ ฉันใด สายธารแห่งบุญย่อมไหลไปสู่

นรชนผู้เป็นบัณฑิต ผู้ให้ข้าว น้ำ ผ้า ที่นอน ที่นั่งและเครื่องปูลาด

เหมือนแม่น้ำไหลไปสู่สาคร ฉันนั้นเหมือนกัน.

    “Mendicants, there are these four kinds of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness that nurture happiness.

    When a noble disciple has these four kinds of overflowing merit and goodness, it’s not easy to count how much merit they have by saying that

    Atha kho asaṅkhyeyyo appameyyo mahāpuññakkhandhotveva saṅkhyaṁ gacchati.

    It’s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of merit.

    Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, mahāsamudde na sukaraṁ udakassa pamāṇaṁ gaṇetuṁ:

    In the same way, when a noble disciple has these four kinds of overflowing merit and goodness, it’s not easy to count how much merit they have by saying that

    “Mahodadhiṁ aparimitaṁ mahāsaraṁ,

    “Hosts of people use the rivers,

    Bahubheravaṁ ratanagaṇānamālayaṁ;

    and though the rivers are many,

    Najjo yathā naragaṇasaṅghasevitā,

    all reach the great deep, the boundless ocean,

  28. 7.4

    Puthū savantī upayanti sāgaraṁ.

    the cruel sea that’s home to precious gems.

  29. 8.1

    Evaṁ naraṁ annapānavatthadadaṁ,

    So too, when a person gives food, drink, and clothes;

  30. 8.2

    Seyyāni paccattharaṇassa dāyakaṁ;

    and they’re a giver of beds, seats, and mats—

  31. 8.3

    Puññassa dhārā upayanti paṇḍitaṁ,

    the streams of merit reach that astute person,

  32. 8.4

    Najjo yathā vārivahāva sāgaran”ti.

    as the rivers bring their waters to the sea.”
